Lifeguard Positions Available at Augustus Brown Swimming Pool

The Parks and Recreation Department is looking to fill multiple Lifeguard positions at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool! As a lifeguard at Augustus Brown Swimming Pool, under general supervision, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and enjoyable experience for guests using the facility by monitoring swimmers, enforcing rules, responding to emergencies, providing care in an emergency, and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility. We are looking for professional, vigilant, and attention-oriented individuals who enjoy working with the public and understand the importance of aquatics in our community. Applicants must also be proficient swimmers and able to work well as part of a team of varying ages and experience levels and be able to handle high-paced and occasionally stressful situations. This position will primarily work at the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool but may also be asked to work at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Our facilities are open to the public seven days a week from 6am-8pm Monday-Friday and 10am-2pm on weekends. This position works shift work and hours will be dependent on the applicant's availability. The primary responsibility of this position is to monitor swimmers and respond to situations where their safety may be compromised. This includes observing guests as they swim and monitoring their proficiency, maintaining a safe environment by enforcing rules, and providing care to guests who may become injured or encounter a physical ailment. During a typical rotation, you may be on the pool deck for up to an hour. Secondary responsibilities will include basic upkeep of the facility by maintaining a clean environment, which is free of trash and clutter, and during the winter, you may be asked to participate in the removal of snow from the facilities entrance. You will also be responsible for monitoring the safe operation of aquatic attractions and the safety of swimmers in the facility abiding safe operation rules. Certified as American Red Cross Lifeguard or the equivalent, and First Aid and CPR certificates. Age: At least 15 years of age at the time of appointment, and eligible to receive a General Duties Work Permit from the Alaska Department of Labor & Workforce Development, if under the age of 17. Note: Some positions may require WSI (water swimming instructor) certification or other specialized certification in diving, scuba diving, or kayaking as appropriate.
