Lifeguard

The Lifeguard is responsible for providing a safe environment for all patrons using the aquatic facility. This includes responding to emergencies and administering CPR/AED, First Aid and Oxygen effectively according to certifications. Lifeguard must be alert and identifiable at all times with a professional appearance. This position works under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor. Essential Job Functions: Performs professional lifeguarding duties to ensure the safety of all pool patrons; performs rescue procedures and administers CPR and First Aid as necessary. Participates in daily routine maintenance of the pool, including water chemistry testing and keeps surrounding areas clean and sanitary. Cleans the facility and equipment as needed. Processes program registrations; accepts and records program fees and other revenue. Assists in planning, coordinating and presenting special aquatic events and other City-wide events. Ensures that all City policies, procedures and safety regulations are followed at all times. Provides assistance to the public by answering phones and in-person inquiries. Prepares and completes required forms and reports timely and accurately. Attends and actively participates in all trainings, staff meetings/in-services and lifeguard drills as assigned. Maintains relationships with co-workers, patrons and the public and represents the City in a professional manner. Serves as role model in pool safety. Performs other duties as requested. Minimum Qualifications, Licenses, Certifications: Education and Experience: Must be at least 15 years of age. Hiring preference is given to those with previous Lifeguard experience. Requires a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate for the Professional Rescuer with Adult/Infant/Child CPR/AED and First Aid; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. May be required to become a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Lifeguard I Pay grade 1

Must be at least 15 years of age. Lifeguard II Pay grade 3

Must be at least 16 years of age. Must have current Lifeguard, CPR/AED/First Aid certification and two (2) seasons of experience as a lifeguard. Hiring preference is given to those with Water Safety Instructor experience and certification. Lifeguard III Pay grade 4

Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a High School Diploma or equivalent. Must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate for the Professional Rescuer with Adult/Infant/Child CPR/AED and First Aid, and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification. A minimum two years of experience lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons is required. Hiring preference is given to those with previous leadership experience. Special Requirements

Emergency Response Status: As a condition of employment, City of St. Pete Beach employees may be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Physical and Environmental Conditions: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES The ability to perform and/or demonstrate various swimming and other physical skills; ability to appropriately apply the principles and practices of water safety and lifesaving procedures; the ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays. Skill in operating various office equipment such as phones, printers and computers. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
