Ocean Lifeguard I (Seasonal)

The City of Imperial Beach is seeking candidates for the position of Ocean Lifeguard I (Seasonal). This role offers part-time/seasonal employment with a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year. The hourly salary ranges from $21.41 to $28.69. Applicants are required to attend one of the tryout dates and submit their application online before participating in the physical abilities test and interview. Licenses and certificates are not required at the time of application but will be needed at the time of hire. The general purpose of the position includes maintaining surveillance over the City's beach, performing aquatic and medical rescues, and enforcing City ordinances. Supervision is received from the Marine Safety Chief, Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Ocean Lifeguard II. The duties and responsibilities involve safeguarding the ocean and beach, performing rescues and administering medical aid, maintaining safety equipment, and preparing records and reports. The position also requires a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and may involve supporting the Junior Lifeguard Program, leading tours, and testifying in court regarding matters of enforcement and litigation. Knowledge of records, public relations, lifesaving techniques, boating safety, and emergency medical system is required. The ability to interpret laws, prepare reports, communicate clearly, establish effective relationships, and meet department health and physical standards is also necessary. Education and experience in lifeguarding or related fields are preferred. Licensing and certificates such as the San Diego Regional Lifeguard Academy's Introduction to Open Water Lifeguarding certificate, a valid Class "C" California driver's license, and CPR or EMT-B certifications are required.
