The City of Hilliard is specifically seeking candidates available for early weekday morning, mid-morning, and early afternoon shifts. Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor of Aquatics, Recreation Coordinator of Aquatics, and Pool Manager, a Lifeguard is responsible for the health and safety of pool participants through careful observation of the pools and surrounding areas, quick response to emergency situations, and enforcing pool rules in connection with the prevention of accidents and providing emergency intervention as required. Essential Functions of Work: Possess thorough knowledge of and consistently enforces policies, rules and regulations, in connection with preventing accidents and injuries. Scan and monitor all patrons in swimming pools and respond immediately in an emergency. Safeguard and regulate the conduct of pool patrons. Help create an outstanding work environment, as well as set the bar for providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers. Maintains cleanliness of their assigned facility, including grass areas, walkways, concession area, guard lounge, offices, filter rooms and bathrooms. Follow appropriate emergency action plan protocol as needed and provides emergency intervention while following proper protocol. Rescues patrons and provides emergency intervention while following proper protocol. Properly use equipment in the performance of first aid and/or other emergency response. Clear all swimmers from pools according to the pool procedures for inclement weather, emergencies, rest periods, drills and closings. Provide professional and courteous service to all patrons. Remain undistracted from the primary area of responsibility for patron and facility safety. Instructs programs such as swim lessons and special programs as required. Assists with pool maintenance and cleaning to include (but not limited to) opening and closing procedures, cleaning duties and supervision during hourly rest periods/adult swim time. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Recreation Coordinators, Recreation Supervisors, Recreation Program Managers, Deputy Director of Recreation and Parks, or the Director of Recreation and Parks or their designee. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance. Knowledge of water rescue methods. Knowledge of lifeguarding and first-aid techniques. Ability to apply first-aid. Knowledge and ability to administer CPR. Ability to maintain surveillance over patrons using the pools. Ability to handle money with honesty and integrity. Ability to work independently. Basic computer knowledge. Ability to assist with pool maintenance, including but not limited to opening and closing procedures, cleaning duties and supervision during hourly rest periods/adult swim time. Ability to exhibit professional behavior and to be a positive role model to other staff. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to supervise, direct, instruct, and solicit cooperation from others in the performance of their daily work assignments and duties. Ability to compile and prepare reports and maintain accurate records. Ability to exercise independent judgement, discretion, and to enforce rules and regulations to the public. Ability to answer inquiries, resolve complaints, and communicate with the public in an effective, tactful courteous, and professional manner. Ability to implement Emergency Action Plans and emergency response plans. Compliance with training directives established by supervisory and management personnel. Adherence to all applicable federal, state and local safety laws, rules and regulations and City policies/procedures. Typical Qualifications: 15 years of age or older. Possession of or ability to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding/CPR/First Aid/AED certification. A background free of prior felony convictions. Regular and punctual attendance is regarded as an essential requirement of this position. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Lifeguards are required to complete bi-weekly in-service training for the current season for which they are hired to maintain their skills. Supplemental Information: Please be advised we are reviewing applications on a rolling basis; therefore, response times may vary. Well Membership: Part-time employees are eligible to enroll in the employee Well membership program. This program allows employees to receive an individual Well membership if they meet the program's quarterly goal. Retirement Pension: The City contributes 14% monthly toward retirement benefits offered through the Ohio Retirement System (OPERS) and the employee contributes 10%. Personal Leave: Part-time employees who have worked for a minimum of 1,000 hours during the prior calendar year for the City, shall be eligible for forty (40) hours of paid personal leave each year. Part-time employees who have worked less than 1,000 hours but more than 500 hours in the previous calendar year for the City shall be eligible for twenty-four (24) hours of paid personal leave each year. We are looking specifically for coverage between the hours of 5:30am-3pm. Please indicate whether you are available to begin your shift at 5:30am, 9am, noon or any of those times.
