Jonathan Alder Local School District Responsibilities Directly supervise students at all times by being present on the bus and alert to student behavior. Keep to assigned schedule and route. Use the bus radio in a professional manner and only for school/safety related business. Report all on duty and off duty violations of traffic laws to supervisor before returning to work. Maintain mature and proper behavior while on duty and on school property. Carry license at all times when on duty, according to Ohio law. Follow Ohio law and district policy in regard to use of cell phones and other electronic devices (may not be used at any time while students are present on the bus). Idle only as needed (5 minutes to warm up in the morning; may be extended to 10 minutes when temperature is below 32). Shut engine off when parked on school property for 3 minutes or more, with exception of a bus using a handicapped lift; do not restart until all students have boarded. Follow district and departmental policies for requesting days/time off. Maintain a good attendance record and a good rapport with the students. Obtain pre-approval for memos or notes to parents of all students on bus route. Maintain confidentiality of school and department related issues; defuse rumors within the driver community. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Coordinator, including field trips.
Qualifications
Must be 21 years of age. Must have the physical capability to perform and perform a daily pre-trip inspection as mandated. Must be physically able to wear a seat belt. Be physically qualified as determined by an annual physical examination (meeting criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education, Form T-8). Complete pre-service and in-service training as per Rule 3301-83-10; able to operate a school van and have knowledge of Transportation Laws and Regulations prior to testing by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Hold a current driver's license. Demonstrates the ability to cope with stressful situations related to all students, including students with disabilities. Possess or upgrade skills through formal and/or in-service training related to transportation of students including students with disabilities. Has a satisfactory work history and driving record as verified through professional references and background checks. The school van driver should have an understanding of pupil transportation in the educational program and meet all applicable laws and district policies. Pass pre-employment drug screen and all job-related drug and alcohol screens as required by Ohio law. Reports to: Transportation Coordinator; Supervises: Children who are passengers on the bus he/she operates.
