This position is responsible for providing prevention training and support services for AI/AN Veterans who have attempted or are at risk of suicide. Through the facilitation of recovery groups and team-building activities, we will provide outreach intervention and prevention services to veterans with a focus on developing treatment strategies using resource services. This position is part of a collaborative treatment team and serves as a liaison between consumer and clinical staff assuring culturally resonant suicide prevention, intervention, treatment, and support services to address not only the rates of suicide but also the risk factors for suicide. The goal of Project Forward is to reduce incidences of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) veteran suicide and suicidal ideation in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB). The long-term community goal is to meet the health, social services, and well-being of AI/AN veterans in the FNSB. The project will provide a full continuum of culturally resonant suicide prevention, intervention, treatment, and support services. Position Summary

Grant Summary
The goal of Project Forward is to reduce incidences of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) veteran suicide and suicidal ideation in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB). The long-term community goal is to meet the health, social services, and well-being of AI/AN veterans in the FNSB. The project will provide a full continuum of culturally resonant suicide prevention, intervention, treatment, and support services.
Job Duties
Develops and facilitates provider and community suicide prevention/intervention training, including Evidence-Based Programs; Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), and Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) that include support services, working with participants and the treatment team to promote overall health and wellbeing of FNSB AI/AN veterans. Develops, conducts, assesses, and refines Community Mobilization/Awareness activities. Supports and trains community Suicide Response Team. Supports and coordinates the Behavioral Health Community Coalition (BHCC). Coordinates and develops suicide protocols, practices, and referral agreements with veteran suicide organizations and groups, as needed. Facilitates quarterly veteran suicide prevention and awareness activities. Works with consumers to understand and address risk factors and connects them with resources and support services. Participates in continuous quality improvement and data-driven decision-making processes to assess program efficacy and drive quality improvement. Ensures adherence to data collection requirements and enters accurate and timely data into the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Provides culturally relevant and trauma-informed service. Attends mandatory position training that provides training in risk factors. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, And Ability
Ability to report to work on time. Knowledge of substance abuse and mental health; and appropriate skills in working with consumers with Mental Health/Substance Use disorders. Skill in working successfully with the Alaska Native/American Indian population and experience providing culturally specific programming; understanding of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles. Skill in operating/using computers and using Windows, Word, and Excel with the ability to accurately input information into reporting formats. Above average communication and people skills with the ability to accurately follow written and verbal instructions. Knowledge of how to best assist possible escalated individuals during the data collection process. Ability to protect confidentiality is essential; HIPAA & 42 CFR compliant. Knowledge and ability to interpret/understand billing procedures. Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting their deadlines. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, agencies, and consumers. Ability to work independently and with teams.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)
Bachelor’s degree in behavioral health or a related field. Two (2) years of experience providing culturally specific services. Three (3) years of experience which included suicide prevention. A combination of experience, education, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for degree requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)
Experience working with veterans. Master’s degree in behavioral health or a related field.
Starting wage:
$25.31 per hour, DOE Seniority level
