Responsibilities
- The Nurse Educator performs advanced professional nursing work within the scope of practice for a registered nurse and coordinates and implements the Nursing Education Program at the State Hospital (SH).
- Orients all newly hired nurses and assists in the orientation of student nurses; evaluates and tests competency of all new and incumbent nursing staff.
- Coordinates and develops systems to ensure nursing education/competency is provided for all nurses; assists in writing and revising nursing guidelines; promotes ethical nursing practice at the SH.
- Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment; provides treatment to HHS employees injured in course and scope of employment.
- Performs duties related to disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation; may require alternate shift pattern and/or location.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
- Attend work regularly; willing to work specific, rotating, extended shifts, and/or overtime as needed.
- Orient new nursing staff to facility protocols and procedures; stay current with nursing philosophy, techniques, and regulations.
- Evaluate competency of nursing staff to ensure high-quality patient care.
- Interpret and communicate regulations; assist in writing and revising nursing guidelines.
- Maintain data related to Nursing Education; coordinate orientation of nursing students as applicable.
- Work independently with all staff levels; provide training on health maintenance and prevention; participate in committees as assigned.
- Provide or coordinate treatment for HHS employees injured on the job.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of nursing techniques, standards, procedures, healthcare laws, and regulations; knowledge of JCAHO/TJC standards, CMS conditions of participation, TAC rules, and SH regulations.
- Strong computer skills and experience with electronic health records; excellent verbal and written communication.
- Ability to train all levels of staff; lead, coach, prioritize, and manage multiple responsibilities; work well in teams.
- Ability to interpret regulations and apply them to practice; interact effectively with individuals with mental health issues and their families, and supervise others.
- Maintain CPR certification; possess or obtain required certifications (e.g., CPR, TIPS).
Licensure/Certifications
- Licensed as a registered nurse in Texas or in a state with Nurse Licensure Compact reciprocity; current CPR certification.
Initial Screening Criteria
- ACEN-accredited BSN with 3 years' experience, CCNE-accredited 4-year degree with experience, or equivalent mix of education/experience; RN experience in a health care setting preferred.
