Overview
EVCS is undergoing a strategic transformation as it advances its mission to expand access to fast, affordable EV charging and accelerate the transition to clean, carbon-free transportation. We are seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead with both strategic foresight and operational agility.
Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is ideal for a seasoned HR leader who is both a strategist and an operator—someone who can architect scalable systems while navigating the day-to-day realities of a lean HR team. The Director will play a critical role in shaping the employee experience, driving organizational effectiveness, and building a values-driven culture that reflects EVCS’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement HR strategies aligned with EVCS’s mission, growth objectives, and evolving organizational structure
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and executive team on workforce planning, talent strategy, and organizational design
- Lead organizational development initiatives, including career pathing, internal mobility and leadership development
- Oversee change management efforts and support cross-functional alignment during periods of transition
- Define and track key HR success metrics (e.g., turnover, engagement, time-to-hire) to assess organizational health and inform decision-making
- Design and implement retention strategies aligned with and balancing organizational objectives and employee needs
Operations
- Oversee all core HR functions including employee relations, compliance, compensation, benefits, and HRIS management
- Build and refine scalable HR processes, policies, and systems that support a growing and distributed workforce
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, with deep expertise in California labor and employment law
- Develop and manage HR contingency planning for business continuity and workforce resilience
- Partner with Finance and legal counsel on regulatory, employment and risk matters
Platform Implementation
- Lead the completion and rollout of recruiting, performance management, and compensation management platforms, including TriNet and Carta
- Ensure systems are integrated, scalable, user-friendly, and aligned with business goals and employee needs
- Manage vendor relationships and evaluate new HR technologies to support efficiency and automation
Talent Acquisition and Development
- Design and drive full-cycle recruitment strategies for technical and non-technical roles
- Develop and implement structured onboarding programs that foster early engagement and role clarity
- Implement performance management frameworks, succession planning, and development planning frameworks
- Build scalable learning and development (L&D) programs that support continuous learning, leadership development and career growth
Culture and Engagement
- Champion a values-driven, inclusive culture rooted in sustainability, innovation, and customer impact
- Foster a culture of transparency, psychological safety, and trust through policy design, leadership development, and internal communications
- Design and execute employee engagement initiatives, including surveys, action planning, and recognition programs
Compensation and Benefits
- Design and manage competitive compensation and benefits programs tailored to a small, growing team
- Conduct market analysis to ensure equity, retention, and alignment with business strategy
- Support equity compensation programs and manage distribution of equity awards via equity management system, Carta
- Manage the HRIS system to support data integrity, reporting, and employee self-service
HR Business Partnership Functions
- Serve as a strategic HR partner to business leaders, supporting team development, succession planning, and workforce strategy
- Provide coaching and guidance to managers on employee relations, conflict resolution, and team dynamics
- Lead or support investigations, disciplinary processes, and sensitive employee matters with discretion and professionalism
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure people practices are aligned with business objectives and organizational values
Requirements:
- 7–10+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership roles in high-growth or mission-driven environments
Bachelor’s degree required; SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, or other HR certifications strongly preferred
Demonstrated success in building HR infrastructure and scaling people operations
Deep expertise in California employment law and regulatory compliance
Proven experience in managing HRIS and implementing new platforms (e.g. ATS, performance management systems)
Strong background in learning and development, organizational design, and employee engagement
Exceptional interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills
Experience in a player-coach role, balancing strategic planning with hands-on execution
Ability to lead through ambiguity, adapt quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment
Passion for sustainability and alignment with EVCS’s mission to decarbonize transportation and lower the total cost of EV ownership
