This position maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the automotive fleet and mechanical equipment of the Fire District. The mechanic must possess strong technical and interpersonal skills, can work under general supervision, and adjust to changing priorities. Essential Duties: Repair, overhaul, and maintain District power tools, vehicles, and apparatus to include power saws, staff vehicles, rescue vehicles, medic units, fire engines, boats, off road vehicles, and ladder trucks. Repair work may include but is not limited to tires, suspension, chassis, brakes, engines, transmissions, aerial equipment, fire pumps, electrical systems, emergency lighting, and communications equipment. Coordinate maintenance of vehicles with shift Battalion Chiefs or designee, individuals with assigned vehicles and the Logistics Specialist. Perform safety inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify safety hazards and make necessary repairs to assure safe operation. Act as a liaison between the District and vendors or other agencies while performing assigned responsibilities. Coordinate repairs with outside shops when needed and inspect completed work for accuracy and completeness. Qualifications: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Completion of a two-year college or trade school for mechanical trade. Five (5) years of minimally supervised work as a mechanic. Mechanic work should include one of, or a combination of, the following fields: automotive, commercial truck (medium to heavy), and/or heavy equipment. This position requires the use of a personal or District vehicle while conducting District business. The individual must be physically capable of operating motor vehicles safely and must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and Commercial Driver's License endorsement with the air brake restriction lifted. Level 1 Emergency Vehicle Technician Certifications strongly preferred (required within 12 months after appointment). Level 2 and Level 3-Master certifications may be expected during employment.
