Job SummaryUnder general direction, the Echocardiographer is responsible for performing diagnostic cardiac ultrasound examinations for patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.ResponsibilitiesNon-Invasive Cardiac Testing Prepares patient for cardiac stress test, assist patient while on treadmill, and injects pharmaceuticals as directed by physician and ensures patient safety and comfort. Possesses knowledge and skills to safely handle radiopharmaceuticals; completes annual radiation safety competency. Seeks pertinent lab values prior to procedure and communicates with physician. Identifies special patient needs and implements appropriate intervention according to established policies and procedures. Clearly explains care to patient during procedure. Observes and documents finding and reports unusual results immediately to physician. Demonstrates care and concern for the privacy and dignity of patient. Directly assists the physician in performing procedures as indicated. Collaborates with nursing personnel and medical staff as appropriate. Verifies physician written order in the chart 100% of the time. Applies 24 hour Holter Monitor and event monitors to patient as per physician order. Scans Holter monitor recordings, accurately inputs information into the system and recognizes abnormalities in the EKG strip appropriately. Prints EKG strips according to protocol and prepares for physician interpretation. Identifies patient using two identifiers. Operates all equipment according to hospital policy, procedures and manufacturers safety specifications. Prepares patient for cardiac stress test, assists patient while on treadmill, and injects pharmaceuticals and necessary medications as directed by physician and ensures patient safety and comfort. Echocardiography/TEE Explains procedure to patient. Performs tasks independently. Seeks pertinent lab values prior to procedure and communicates with physician. Performs echocardiography studies according to protocol. Studies are consistently of good quality. Assists physician appropriately with Transesophageal Echo by properly operating equipment throughout procedure. Assists RN with room preparation, patient care and other related duties for TEE. Obtains and processes quality diagnostic test results using assigned equipment for Echocardiography. Provides permanent image documentation per physician order and procedure protocols. Collaborates with nursing personnel and medical staff as appropriate. Identifies patient using two identifiers. Operates all equipment according to hospital policy, procedures and manufacturers' safety specifications. Verifies physician written order 100% of the time. Cleans and maintains the TEE probe to avoid damage or malfunction. Communicates effectively with OR to ensue proper equipment is present and ready for patient care. Assumes on-call responsibility and reports to work within the time specified by hospital guidelines. Performs Department Support Duties Promptly answers phone, takes patient information, pertinent medical data, and patient preferences. Notifies scheduling department of appointments and confirms the demographic information. Uses courteous phone manners. Properly transfers calls, identifying self and person being transferred. Accurately enters patient information into CIS. Transcribes data accurately. Maintains orderly patient records/files. Possesses knowledge and skills to identify equipment malfunctions and notify the appropriate person in a timely manner. Assists in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement data collection. Retrieves previous charts. Prepares, completes and files all patient charts as per established procedures. Documents all test procedures on appropriate logs. Obtains informed consent according to hospital policy when releasing any patient information. Enters charges appropriately. Provides appropriate billing information to physician in a timely manner. Orders supplies and maintains appropriate inventory levels. Performs Other Duties as Required Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Completes all required competency assessments on time. Maintains required job knowledge (e.g. licensure and credentials, continuing education etc.). Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesHeavy Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs with a maximum lifting of 100 lbs.Experience in cardiovascular imaging preferred.
