Job Summary Newberry Group seeks a detail-oriented and collaborative
Technical Writer
to support enterprise-wide process documentation and customer journey mapping efforts. This role will play a key part in capturing and communicating complex workflows, procedures, and user experiences in a clear, consistent, and accessible format to support USDA’s modernization and service delivery goals.
Location Remote
Clearance/Certifications Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance – U.S. citizenship required
Key Responsibilities:
Document business processes, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and technical workflows in collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs), analysts, and program teams. Develop clear, user-friendly documentation that supports internal operations, training, and knowledge transfer across USDA mission areas. Create and maintain customer journey maps that visualize end-to-end user experiences, pain points, and opportunities for improvement across USDA services. Translate complex technical and operational information into accessible content for both technical and non-technical audiences. Support process improvement and digital transformation initiatives by documenting current-state and future-state workflows. Ensure consistency in terminology, formatting, and structure across all documentation in alignment with USDA standards and federal plain language guidelines. Collaborate with UX designers, business analysts, and process improvement teams to ensure documentation reflects real-world user needs and system behaviors. Maintain version control and documentation repositories, ensuring content is up-to-date, searchable, and accessible. Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Information Systems, or a related field. 4+ years of experience in technical writing, process documentation, or business analysis. Strong experience creating SOPs, process maps, and user documentation in complex environments. Proficiency with documentation tools (e.g., Microsoft Visio, Confluence, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat). Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams. Experience working in or with federal agencies, preferably within USDA or similar mission-driven organizations. Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with USDA programs, terminology, and service delivery models. Experience with journey mapping tools (e.g., Miro, Smaply, UXPressia). Understanding of federal plain language and Section 508 accessibility standards. Experience supporting Agile or Lean project environments.
