Under the general supervision of the Director of Physical Plant, you will perform skilled work in painting, carpentry, and general maintenance; perform routine maintenance work; and complete related work as assigned. Assist tradesman set-up and clean work areas, Transport heavy supplies and equipment to work site; assist in moving non-permanent fixtures and/or furniture and equipment to allow easier access to work surfaces, break cement; dig pits and trenches; lay protective papers and tarpaulins; dispose/recycle and supplies properly; assure job site is clean and safe and free of unwanted debris; assist in dismantling of scaffolding, perform general clean up as directed. Accompany employees on work assignments upon request. Access job sites which may be above ceilings, rooftops, behind walls, in crawl spaces, etc.; work at any height from below ground level to several stories high; assist tradespeople with handling materials, supplies, and equipment; escort employees for safety purposes in tight, hig,h or otherwise dangerous situations; gather tools and other supplies necessary to complete work orders. Maintain equipment for department use. Perform routine repairs to all department equipment; change belts. Keep department records regarding equipment; track inventory and usage; maintain service logs of work orders, record, and close work orders. Drive licensed vehicles for the college business. Operate trucks and automobiles. Understand and obey all traffic laws. Pick up and deliver packages, supplies, and equipment; transport personnel; run errands; assist in loading and unloading equipment and vehicles; provide pickup and delivery services as requested. Maintain safe working conditions by using supplies and equipment properly and taking the necessary precautions. Work outdoors in inclement weather conditions; pick up trash and keep campus clean. Handyman positions are considered "essential Personnel" and are required to report during a college emergency closure period. Perform other duties as assigned. Conduct routine inspections of buildings; check and report equipment malfunctions and take corrective actions. Refurbish and paint the college building and houses. Replace torn or soiled/stained carpet tiles. Report potential hazards beyond the assigned work orders. Other duties as assigned. Supervising students helps Advise management on equipment that has served its expectancy and is ready for replacement.
QUALIFICATION: A High School diploma or GED A valid driver's license and satisfactory driving records as determined by Carthage College. Ability to transport and place weighty supplies, tools, and equipment, including hand power tools, cans of paint and tar, sledge hammers, wheelbarrows, furniture, ladders, sheet metal, bags of sand, cement, lime, building materials, rubble, etc. Ability to access areas at varying heights from below ground level to several stories high. Ability to be flexible and work in a variety of positions. Ability to work in varying environmental and possibly hazardous conditions, utilizing appropriate safety precautions and safety equipment. Ability to follow instructions. Perform manual labor such as moving furniture and equipment; arranging furniture, stages, and seating; and digging holes and ditches using manual tools and power tools. Assisted in cleaning grounds after special events and swept and cleaned sidewalks and streets using hand tools and shovels. Make minor repairs to streets, including repairing and installing signs.
