Overview
Senior Accountant — Location: New York, NY. New York Common Pantry is one of the city’s largest hunger relief organizations, providing food assistance, case management services, senior food provision, nutrition education, and hygiene services. NYCP is a poverty-fighting organization that reduces hunger and promotes dignity, health, and self-sufficiency by using a holistic approach to reach over 122,000 distinct people and 729,000 visitors each year. Last year, we served over 11 million meals. Through our programs, we aim to establish long-term stability for those we serve.
The Senior Accountant oversees the organization’s day-to-day accounting operations and ensures accuracy, transparency, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and applicable regulations. This role focuses on fund accounting, grant compliance, donor reporting, and audit readiness. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with a strong foundation in nonprofit financial management and a passion for supporting mission-driven work.
The Senior Accountant reports to the Controller at 8 East 109th, New York, NY 10029. The position is full-time, exempt with hybrid work flexibility.
Responsibilities
- Accounting Operations & Financial Oversight
- Manage daily accounting functions, including the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, bank reconciliations, and restricted fund tracking.
- Assist the Controller with the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and reconciliations.
- Oversee the accurate coding and classification of all revenues and expenses according to funding and grant requirements.
- Compliance & Controls
- Maintain compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP, FASB), IRS regulations, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Support ongoing audit readiness; coordinate and assist the Controller with the annual audit process, including preparing audit schedules and documentation.
- Grant & Fund Management
- Collaborate with the Contract and Grants Manager on the reporting of multiple funding sources, including restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Partner with the Contract and Grants Manager to prepare monthly vouchers and provide support documentation as needed.
- Work closely with the Development and Grants teams to ensure proper recognition, allocation, and release of donor-restricted funds.
- Contribute to grant budgets, support compliance with funding terms, and assist with providing timely financial reports to Program and Development staff.
- Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
- Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Supervise and mentor Staff Accountant, Grants & Contracts Associate, and serve as a backup to these positions.
- Promote professional growth within the team and establish clear standards for performance excellence.
- Work closely with the Program, Development, Operations, and HR teams to ensure integrated financial operations and efficient workflows.
- System & Process Improvement
- Support current accounts payable and general accounting processes; recommend and implement improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required; a Master's degree in a related field is preferred.
- A minimum of 4 years of accounting experience with at least one year of nonprofit experience is preferred.
- Commitment to helping the communities in need and NYCP’s work and mission.
- A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive.
- Proficiency in fund accounting and nonprofit financial reporting.
- Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial standards.
- Experience with accounting software such as Fund EZ, QuickBooks Nonprofit, or Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT.
- Familiarity with federal and state grant regulations, including OMB Uniform Guidance.
- Experience working with donor CRM platforms (Raiser’s Edge) and integrating data with accounting systems.
- Professional analytical and problem-solving skills.

- Multi-task and work in a highly trafficked area.
Pay
Pay: $75,000 - $85,000 / year
