The Paramedic Field Training Officer (FTO) is responsible for providing mentorship, training, and evaluation to newly hired paramedics and EMTs. This role combines clinical excellence with leadership and educational responsibilities to ensure high standards of patient care and operational readiness. The FTO serves as a role model and resource for best practices in emergency medical services. Conduct initial orientation, ride-alongs, and structured training for new employees. Evaluate the performance, clinical skills, and professional demeanor of trainees through observation, feedback, and documentation. Provide hands-on instruction and guidance in both routine and high-stress emergency situations. Maintain thorough and timely training records, daily evaluations, and progress reports. Assist in developing and updating field training manuals, guidelines, and evaluation tools. Promote adherence to company policies, clinical protocols, and industry standards. Serve as a liaison between trainees and supervisory staff, addressing concerns or issues as needed. Attend training meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of EMS education programs. Maintain operational readiness and respond to emergency calls as a lead paramedic when not assigned a trainee. Serve as a mentor and resource for continuing education and skill development for all field staff.

Qualifications

Education and Certification:

Current state licensure as a Paramedic. Current certifications in ACLS, PALS, BLS, and PHTLS or equivalent. Field Training Officer certification or equivalent preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 2–3 years of full-time field experience as a Paramedic. Previous leadership, training, or preceptorship experience strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Strong clinical competence and adherence to protocols. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and coaching skills. Ability to evaluate performance objectively and provide constructive feedback. Sound judgment in emergency situations and high-stress environments. Proficiency in EMS reporting systems and Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and move patients and equipment. Capable of performing duties in extreme conditions (heat, noise, stress). Must meet all physical and medical requirements of a field paramedic. Seniority level
