Overview

CDL A Truck Driver role at Safeway (Albertsons Companies). This position is based in Boise, Idaho; Pleasanton, CA; Dallas, TX; or Phoenix, AZ. Local and regional routes with some overnight trips; drivers are largely home daily with some overnight routes in select areas.

Main Responsibilities

  • Report to work at scheduled start time and receive route paperwork, truck and trailer assignment, and route instructions.
  • Review and document Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR); perform pre-trip, en route, and post-trip inspections in accordance with FMCSA regulations (49 C.F.R. 396.11).
  • Verify load, load destination, and proper load securement; couple tractor to trailer and inspect fifth wheel, release handle, and locking jaws.
  • Scale loads and adjust as needed; follow route plan to meet all delivery/pickup requirements for each store.
  • Complete store clean outs and load items for return to the distribution center as contracted; communicate issues affecting the route plan.
  • Ensure cargo is secured during delivery; complete required paperwork and adhere to temperature requirements.
  • Accurately report hours of service using an electronic logging device (ELD) and certify logs daily; conduct post-trip inspections and document any truck or trailer defects in the DVIR.

The position requires a valid Class A CDL and a strong commitment to DOT compliance, safety, and providing top-notch service to stores on local and regional routes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Customer Service: Ability to assess customer needs, meet quality service standards, and evaluate customer satisfaction.
  • Winter Driving: Ability to use snow chains and drive in snowy or slippery conditions when needed.
  • Fluid checks and Fueling: Knowledge of checking fluids and fueling procedures.
  • FMCSA Regulations: Knowledge of FMCSA requirements including hours of service.
  • Safe Operation of Commercial Vehicle: Safe operation and professional representation of the company.
  • Defensive Driving: Safety mindset, space management, and awareness of other drivers.
  • Problem Solving: Define problems, identify causes, and implement solutions.
  • Pallet Jacks: Safe maneuvering of pallet jacks.
  • Load Securing: Knowledge of load-securing methods.
  • Route Planning: Familiarity with store locations and surrounding areas.
  • TWIC: Transportation Worker Identification Credential preferred but not required.

Physical Environment and Working Conditions

  • Remain seated for prolonged periods; operate tractor-trailers.
  • Climb ramps/stairs to enter/exit vehicles; lift up to 100 pounds on occasion; push/pull up to 100 pounds.
  • Reach overhead to unstack pallets up to 6 feet; may require crawling, crouching, kneeling, or stooping.
  • Work varying hours, including overnight; PPE required (steel-toe boots, etc.).
  • Exposure to contaminants, hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures, and moving machinery; safety precautions in place.
