Responsibilities

  • Patrol and monitor the campus and surrounding areas to ensure the safety and well‑being of students and staff, and the security of the facility.
  • Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies.
  • Control traffic and parking on campus grounds during campus hours.
  • Promote student responsibility for behavior by serving as a role model; dress and groom professionally and wear District designated attire during assigned hours.
  • Assist staff, police, and emergency personnel in handling emergencies or disruptive situations.
  • Assist visitors with directions and securing proper identification; intercept unauthorized visitors and escort them to exits.
  • Notify building administration, police, and/or emergency personnel of emergencies or potentially dangerous/unusual situations.
  • Report evidence of substance abuse, child abuse/neglect, medical or social concerns, potential suicide, or substances to appropriate personnel.
  • Participate in in‑service training and workshop programs; follow safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information; exercise discretion within legal means.
  • Maintain campus security and protect district property; check buildings and grounds for security and unauthorized visitors.
  • Initiate contact with individuals on school grounds to verify visitor authorization.
  • Inspect and monitor the security of doors, windows, and gates.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during work.
  • Perform duties within the scope of employment as assigned by supervisor and within legal/regulatory boundaries.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education / Certification:
    • High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree (preferred).
    • Valid Certification as a Peace Officer as prescribed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCLEOSE) (preferred).
    • Coursework, training, or certification in public safety, school safety and security, emergency services, emergency management, Incident Command Systems, investigations and related areas (preferred).
  • Special Knowledge / Skills:
    • Knowledge of emergency operations planning, NIMS and FEMA, health and safety programs, and applicable laws.
    • Knowledge of criminal investigations, police report writing, and criminal law.
    • Working knowledge of security-related technology (security cameras, video exporting, access control systems, telecommunications, etc.).
    • Strong public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to implement policies and procedures, manage multiple priorities, and use computer software.
    • Excellent judgment, writing and verbal communication skills; ability to draft policies, procedures, training materials and reports.
    • Ability to pass a standard fitness exam annually and a pistol qualification course with a passing score (90%+) annually.
    • Pass a psychological evaluation upon hire and every two years.
  • Experience:
    • 3–5 years in safety and security preferred.
    • Prior law enforcement experience and retired Texas Peace Officer preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Environment: Work inside and outside with exposure to sun, heat, cold, inclement weather; moderate noise and vehicle exhaust; possible districtwide/statewide travel.
  • Physical: Extended time on feet; occasional bending/stooping, lifting under 50 pounds; strenuous walking and stairs; driving; use of two-way radio, firearm, and other security equipment.
  • Mental: Maintain emotional control under stress; fast-paced, high‑intensity environment; specific hearing/visual requirements; may involve hazardous conditions and armed confrontations.

Performance evaluated per Board Policy on Evaluations. Reports to: Senior Director of Safety & Security.
