Position Summary Information









The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Craniofacial and Surgical Care provides a diverse approach to treatment for patients with craniofacial or oral and maxillofacial conditions, including those with multiple or complex oral health problems. The Henson Geriatric and Special Care Clinic provides specialized treatment for patients with closed head injury, epilepsy, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and more. The Henson Geriatric and Special Care Clinic delivers general dental services in the care of these patients and provides education for oral health personnel in the management and treatment of elderly and/or medically, physically or developmentally compromised patients.




The Dental Assistant will provide dental assisting and surgical duties to the Dental Faculty Practice, Student, and Graduate clinics within the Special Care/Geriatric Clinic. Tasks include preparing the clinic, setting up surgical trays using sterile techniques, assisting with a variety of surgical and dental procedures, assist in obtaining surgical consent, obtain and document pre and post op vitals. Assist patient and families as needed, enter charges, and restocking the inventories in the rooms in a prescribed manner.




High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Valid CPR certification.
Knowledge of OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, sterile technique, and infection control guidelines.
Basic comprehension of Dental Assisting within the Special Care setting, to include medically complex and low functioning patients.
Ability to maintain composure and professionalism when exposed to stressful situations; work cooperatively with faculty, residents, dental students, management, staff, and patients; prioritize, organize, and complete tasks in a timely and independent manner; accept constructive feedback; understand and follow written and verbal instructions; communicate and express thoughts and ideas competently; quickly grasp relevant concepts regarding duties and responsibilities; work with special needs and vulnerable populations with compassion, patience, and empathy.








Active movement throughout the day: sitting, walking, standing, squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, etc. (not a sedentary position).
Vision: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Hearing: able to satisfactorily communicate with patients, doctor, and other staff members to ensure that verbal communication is clearly understood, particularly during emergency situations.
May be required to push up to 250-lb person in a wheel-chair; lift up to 50 pounds; and physically assist/lift drowsy patients after anesthesia.
