Job Summary
The anticipated duration of this assignment is 3 months.
The Medical Assistant III plays a critical role in enhancing the patient experience by supporting both clinical and clerical functions in an ambulatory care setting. This position floats between front and back office responsibilities, optimizing clinic flow, assisting with patient care, and ensuring high service standards.
Candidates must have flexibility to work variable shifts (including weekends, holidays, early mornings, evenings, and 12-hour shifts) and be able to cover multiple UCSF Health clinics across the Bay Area.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Support Perform vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and document chief complaints. Assist providers with exams and procedures; act as a chaperone when needed. Conduct EKGs, specimen collection, point-of-care testing, and laboratory procedures. Support infection control, instrument processing, and medication handling procedures. Document patient care in the electronic health record (Epic/Apex). Patient Care & Communication Maintain effective patient flow and communicate delays or service issues. Provide patient education, support, and outreach as directed. Coordinate with interpreters for patient appointments. Communicate with patients and families using sensitivity, professionalism, and UCSF PRIDE standards. Administrative & Clerical Support Schedule patient appointments and follow-up care. Manage electronic in-basket messages, refill requests, and patient communications. Assist with scanning, filing, and maintaining accurate records. Support supply management, quality improvement projects, and customer service initiatives. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program (or equivalent training/experience). CPT-1 certification within six months of hire (required for MA III classification; candidates without CPT-1 will be hired as MA II and reclassified upon certification). Current American Heart Association CPR certification. Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word and Excel. Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of experience as a Hospital/Medical Assistant. Experience with Epic electronic health record. Familiarity with current point-of-care testing equipment.
License/Certification
Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
