Software Engineer
to design, build, and deploy the next generation of software systems for managing vast amounts of scientific data. You will be at the intersection of software engineering, cloud computing, and data science, creating robust platforms that handle the entire lifecycle of crucial geospatial and hydrographic information. If you want to write code that has a tangible impact on scientific discovery and data accessibility, this is the role for you. What You'll Do: Architect & Build:
Design, develop, and maintain scalable software applications and data pipelines to process, analyze, and manage complex scientific data. Embrace the Cloud:
Engineer and implement cloud-native infrastructure on AWS (using services like Lambda, EC2, S3, and EKS) to support the full data lifecycle, from ingestion to public dissemination. Automate & Innovate:
Develop tools and automated workflows, primarily in Python, to enforce data quality, implement metadata standards, and streamline complex processes. Bridge Science and Technology:
Collaborate closely with scientists, GIS specialists, and data managers to translate scientific requirements into powerful, effective technology solutions. Deploy Modern Software:
Manage and deploy containerized applications using best practices in CI/CD, Docker, and Kubernetes. Drive Data Strategy:
Contribute to the technical implementation of data and metadata management policies, ensuring compliance with standards like the IHO S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model. Qualifications & Experience: We are looking for a candidate with 5+ years of experience in software engineering or a related technical field, along with a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a relevant scientific discipline. Required Skills: Version Control:
Deep familiarity with version control best practices and software (e.g., Git). Operating Systems:
High comfort level working in
Linux-based
computer systems. Cloud Computing:
Hands-on experience with
AWS services
(e.g., Lambda, EC2, S3). Technical Acumen:
Proven ability to work in a technical or scientific field and produce clear documentation. Preferred Skills (Bonus Points): Hydrographic Data:
Familiarity with the
IHO S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model . Scientific Data Formats:
Experience with scientific raster/vector data (e.g., NOAA datasets) and formats like netCDF, GRIB2, HDF5, shapefiles, or geopackages. Containerization:
Knowledge of container-based development and deployment ( Docker, Kubernetes ). Databases & Web Services:
Experience with relational databases like
PostgreSQL/PostGIS
and/or web mapping services like
GeoServer . Full-Stack Familiarity:
Some knowledge of
Java
