Job ID: | Amazon Data Services, Inc. AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure continual access to our customers’ cloud services. The Data Center Engineering Operations team maintains and operates critical infrastructure systems to be prepared for various situations. AWS data centers are designed to be safe, secure, and highly available, and Chief Engineers collaborate with global teams to test and implement new technology and practices.
Key responsibilities
- Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities-related issues. Oversee operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems such as switchgear, generators, UPS, power distribution, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, and building monitoring systems.
- Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot facilities within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA).
- Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and collaborate with the Facility Manager (FM) to set team culture.
- Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams.
- Assist in the build-out of new facilities and in projects to increase facility efficiency.
- Work outside of normal business hours for routine maintenance and respond to out-of-hours emergency calls when required.
- Communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
- Coordinate with IT managers and business leaders to manage projects, capacity, and optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency.
- Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendors and Amazon staff.
- Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on all aspects of critical facility operations and maintenance.
- Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other basic administrative tools for day-to-day tasks.
Physical requirements
- Willingness and ability to work in physical conditions with reasonable accommodations:
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently; participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds.
- Maintain balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder; frequent walking, handling, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing stairs, bending, and lifting.
- Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection.
A day in the life
This role acts as Amazon’s front line for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting in mission-critical data center facilities. Equipment includes standby diesel generators, 3-phase electrical systems (switchgear, UPS, PDUs), and batteries, as well as mechanical systems such as CRAHU units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and motors. Support equipment includes fire/life safety systems, building automation, and other facilities equipment. The Chief Engineer directs, trains, and supports technicians in hands-on troubleshooting and operations, conducts site/equipment-specific training, and manages projects from conception to completion, coordinating with internal and external teams and tracking costs and milestones.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Technical training or degree in a relevant field (e.g., electrical, mechanical).
- 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience.
- 3+ years of data center or mission-critical facilities experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- 4+ years of Data Center Engineering experience.
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree.
- Experience leading a team.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across multiple US geographic markets. Base pay for this position ranges from $83,100/year to $185,000/year, depending on location, experience, and knowledge.
