A Day in the Life of a Phlebotomist

The phlebotomist is primarily responsible for performing blood collection procedures using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, ensuring accurate and safe collection of patient specimens. Additional tasks include conducting workplace drug screenings adhering to strict protocols and managing specimen processing for both in-house and reference laboratories. The role includes clerical work such as data entry and maintaining communication via phone and fax. The work environment can be fast-paced and stressful, requiring high organization and prioritization. Collaboration with laboratory technicians, nurses, and administrative staff is essential to ensure seamless operation and compliance with healthcare standards.

Responsibilities

The following outlines responsibilities associated with this role:

  • Perform blood collection procedures via venipuncture and capillary puncture
  • Conduct workplace drug screenings following established protocols
  • Process specimens for in-house and reference laboratories
  • Handle clerical tasks including data entry and communication via phone/fax
  • Maintain high levels of organization and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborate with laboratory technicians, nurses, and administrative staff to ensure compliance and smooth operations

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent (Required)

Preferred

  • Experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital setting
  • Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $17.43 - $21.66 per hour

Travel: None

Job Type: Part-time (.3 FTE, 24 hours/pay period)

Shift: 8-hour Night Shift

Job Category: Every other weekend
