Overview

Obtain and prepare specimens for laboratory testing, perform admissions, and verify patient orders.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods on neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in a timely manner and collect urine drug screens according to Department of Transportation specifications.
  • Perform admission, request, receipt, and reporting of lab specimens.
  • Verify orders entered by others and resolve conflicting orders to benefit the patient.
  • Participate in economical utilization of supplies and maintain phlebotomy equipment in a clean and safe manner.
  • Educate patients on specimen collection and assist nursing with waived test proficiency testing.
  • Provide courier and supply services for clients and escalate client concerns to management if needed.
  • Assist with record keeping in the department.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety practices according to policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Phlebotomy certification by an accredited agency preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology required.
  • Strong computer and people skills required.
  • Good office skills and telephone etiquette required.
  • Must obtain BLS certification within 90 days of employment and maintain it.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Valid AL driver’s license and insurability required.
