Overview
Obtain and prepare specimens for laboratory testing, perform admissions, and verify patient orders.
Responsibilities
- Collect blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods on neonatal, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in a timely manner and collect urine drug screens according to Department of Transportation specifications.
- Perform admission, request, receipt, and reporting of lab specimens.
- Verify orders entered by others and resolve conflicting orders to benefit the patient.
- Participate in economical utilization of supplies and maintain phlebotomy equipment in a clean and safe manner.
- Educate patients on specimen collection and assist nursing with waived test proficiency testing.
- Provide courier and supply services for clients and escalate client concerns to management if needed.
- Assist with record keeping in the department.
- Adhere to infection control and safety practices according to policies and procedures.

Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Phlebotomy certification by an accredited agency preferred.
- Basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology required.
- Strong computer and people skills required.
- Good office skills and telephone etiquette required.
- Must obtain BLS certification within 90 days of employment and maintain it.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
- Valid AL driver’s license and insurability required.
