Overview

An Opportunity to Join our Remarkable Care as Phlebotomist in the Specimen Processing Department awaits YOU.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy on both outpatient and inpatients, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, infant heel sticks, and urine collection with proper patient identification and customer service.
  • Performs specimen processing, data entry in the electronic medical record system, and other pre-analytic functions; obtains accurate patient demographic and insurance information.
  • Registers outpatients in the hospital EMR (EPIC) and determines preliminary patient or insurance payment obligation.
  • Troubleshoots problems related to missing specimens and discrepancies between specimens and orders.
  • Acts as a representative of the department; communicates with patients and physician offices following departmental policies.
  • Uses good judgment to decide when to contact a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Manager, or Pathologist.
  • Maintains knowledge of patient preparation and specimen collection requirements; accesses online sources as needed.
  • May utilize a glucometer or perform waived urine testing prior to administration of glucola.
  • Works with minimal supervision and may travel to other phlebotomy service centers.
  • Completes specimen handling and processing (centrifugation, aliquoting, pH adjustments for 24-hour urine if required).
  • Maintains supply levels, cleanliness, and assists in training new employees and students.
  • Completes continuing education documents and mandatory training; performs routine quality control of equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality per HIPAA and hospital policies; upholds mission and values; ensures safety and reports hazards.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Phlebotomy, medical assistant, or patient care technician training preferred. Prior phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Experience: Previous medical/lab experience preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to follow written and verbal instructions; strong interpersonal and communication skills; attention to detail; ability to stand for approximately 60% of work time; organizational skills; computer literacy.
