Position Summary
Assist and support the licensed clinical care team members by providing phlebotomy services in an ambulatory care environment. Responsible for the performance of multiple duties relating to specimen collection and handling in a medical office setting while utilizing the five (5) Simply Better steps with every patient and team member interaction.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Must have the ability, skill-set, qualifications, education, and licensure required for all responsibilities of this position.
- Excel in communication (written & verbal), customer service, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Prioritize, organize, and multi-task while demonstrating attention to detail and follow-through. Use critical thinking to identify issues, problem-solve, demonstrate initiative, and take responsibility.
- Ensure laboratory adherence to quality and safety protocols as established by the organization and regulatory agencies. Escalate any concerns or variations appropriately.
- Be punctual and reliable in attendance.
- Follow company policies, procedures, and directives.
- Interact positively and constructively with colleagues and patients.
- Obtain venipunctures and capillary specimens on all patients (geriatric, pediatric, obese, etc.) based on provider orders and laboratory guidelines.
- Adhere to laboratory standard work and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Understand and adhere to the Scope of Practice based on licensure.
- Ensure two patient identifiers are acknowledged prior to specimen collection, label all specimens immediately in front of the patient.
- Maintain all Quality Control (QC) data/logs per regulatory and department guidelines.
- Promptly forward all requested data to supervisor and complete daily logs by shift end.
- Obtain approval from the primary care provider for all non-approved referral provider-ordered tests.
- Provide proper follow-up on all tests in question (TIQ), promptly notify physicians of critical and stat values, and contact patients for re-draws as needed.
- Disinfect laboratory areas daily and maintain laboratory standards per 5S principles.
- Provide coverage as a Medical Assistant if applicable.
- Keep supervisors informed of laboratory issues.
- Perform additional duties as requested within scope of knowledge and ability.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Work Experience
Education/License/Certification
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Certificate of Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) required.
- Current BLS for Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association required.
- Certificate from an Accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred.
- Minimum one (1) year of phlebotomy experience required.
- Experience in pediatric phlebotomy preferred.
