Education Experience Reportsto: Work involves being able toperceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or withoutcorrection; the ability to make fine discriminations in sound. Work requiresclose visual and acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an objectinto sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor toforms/printed material that are closer to compare data at close vision. Must be able to be active forextended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue. Must be able towork flexible hours. Work involves using many physicalmotions in performing daily work activities; subject to exposure of bodyfluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectiousdisease. Work involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements ofthe wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipmentsuch as computer keyboard. Must demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decisionmaking abilities. Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meetdeadlines. Work requires the ability to functionindependently and as a team; must have the ability to adapt to workloaddemands. Work requires the realization that an error may have seriousconsequences for patients. Must have a valid driver license as job requirestraveling throughout the SRHS service area.

The Phlebotomist/Courier transports laboratory specimens to andfrom the clinic site and Singing River Health System in accordance with departmentaland System procedures and guidelines. He/She verifies all orders, procedures,and specimens according to current procedures. The Phlebotomist/Courierpractices safe driving habits and follows all safety guidelines. He/Shecontributes to the department’s standard of excellence in providing qualityservices to patients and clients.
The Phlebotomist/Courier performs venipunctures, heel and fingersticks, and other specimen collections for the clinical laboratory testing.The Phlebotomist ensures that appropriate specimens are collected from theproper patients, as well as work and communicate effectively with a variety ofpatients, including but not limited to, critically ill, trauma, newborn,geriatric, and outpatients in numerous outpatient settings.
The Phlebotomist/Courier provides accurate patientidentification, specimen labeling, preservation, transportation and pre-test processing.He/She performs clerical duties; processes orders; performs computerfunctions; files reports; records/sends messages; gives reports to thenurse/doctor; and, transcribes doctors’ orders on outpatients.
High School graduate or equivalent required; some college withcourses in a health or science-related field preferred. Training in computer, basicoffice equipment and medical terminology preferred.
License
Must have a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory drivingrecord; must maintain a satisfactory driving record
Certification
If certified, a current Phlebotomy certification from an approved agency is preferred. Certification must be from one of the following:
•ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification)
•APA (American Phlebotomy Association)
•AMT (American Medical Technologists)
•NHA (National Health Career Association)
•NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing)
•NIHP (National Institute of Health Professionals)
•MedCA (Medical Career Association)
•NPC (National Phlebotomy Certification Exam)
•AAH (American Allied Health)
•Any accredited certification not listed, can be reviewed for approval by the Lab Director
Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days); must have appropriate level of de-escalation training.
One (1) year Phlebotomy experience preferred. Must have equivalent combination of educationand/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities havebeen achieved.
SRHS Laboratory Director under the direct supervision of the SRHSPhlebotomy Supervisor or Phlebotomy Team Leader.

Physical Demands:
Work is moderately active: involvessitting with frequent requirements to move about the office, move about thefacility, and to travel to another facility within the SRHS service area.Work involves exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift,carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Workinvolves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists,hands and/or fingers while operating standard office equipment such ascomputer keyboard copier and 10-key.
Mental Demands:
Keen mental faculties to perform data collection and specimencollection. Must demonstrate communications/speaking/enunciation skills toreceive and provide information in person and by telephone. Must possessemotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels.
Special Demands:
Must possess proficient knowledge andability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other officetechnology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.) Must have intermediate knowledge ofMS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
