Overview
The Phlebotomist/Courier transports laboratory specimens to and from the clinic site and Singing River Health System in accordance with departmental and System procedures and guidelines. Verifies all orders, procedures, and specimens according to current procedures. Practices safe driving habits and follows all safety guidelines. Contributes to the department’s standard of excellence in providing quality services to patients and clients.

- Work: Outpatient Float
- Shift: 8-hour shifts; rotating weekends and holidays; start times may be as early as 6:00 AM and end as late as 5:00 PM

Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures, heel and finger sticks, and other specimen collections for clinical laboratory testing.
- Ensure appropriate specimens are collected from the proper patients; work and communicate effectively with a variety of patients (e.g., critically ill, trauma, newborn, geriatric, outpatients).
- Provide accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, preservation, transportation and pre-test processing.
- Perform clerical duties: process orders, computer functions, file reports, transmit messages, provide reports to nurses/doctors, and transcribe orders for outpatients.
Qualifications
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent required; some college with health/science courses preferred. Training in computer usage, basic office equipment and medical terminology preferred.
- License: Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record; must maintain satisfactory driving record.
- Certification: If certified, current phlebotomy certification from an approved agency is preferred. Acceptable certs include ASCP, APA, AMT, NHA, NCCT, NIHP, MedCA, NPC, AAH, or any accredited certification reviewed for approval by the Lab Director.
- Experience: One (1) year phlebotomy experience preferred; equivalent combination of education and/or experience acceptable.
- De-escalation training to be completed by end of orientation (90 days).
Reports To
SRHS Laboratory Director, under the direct supervision of the SRHS Phlebotomy Supervisor or Phlebotomy Team Leader.

Physical, Mental & Special Demands
- Physical: Moderately active; requires movement around offices and facilities; travel to SRHS service area.
- Supports handling of body fluids, sputum, and tissues; exposure to infectious risk; frequent repetitive motions of wrists/hands/fingers; normal hearing and vision requirements; ability to work extended periods and flexible hours.
- Mental: Strong data collection and specimen handling skills; clear communication; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Special: Computer proficiency (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); able to work independently and as part of a team; valid driver license for travel.
