Summary

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities

  • Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
  • Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain venipuncture process clearly and courteously. Collect other specimens as required (e.g., urine, stool).
  • Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Understand all physician orders. Match requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
  • Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport; store specimens at required temperatures; label containers; follow protocol to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings; answer inquiries about laboratory results as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required
  • Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2 years of experience
