The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws (venipuncture) on patients of all ages; use straight or butterfly needles
• Label specimens, centrifuge, and decontaminate specimens as required
• Record maintenance data and update patient information
• Explain the venipuncture process clearly and courteously
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; ensure correct labeling
• Package specimens for transport and store according to required temperatures
• Place samples in appropriate collection containers; follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations; attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone inquiries and relay laboratory results as needed

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment
• Minimum of 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• High School Diploma or GED
