We're seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to join our team of compassionate caregivers. Our 25-bed critical access hospital allows our staff to provide excellent patient care in an environment that supports professional growth with the latest technologies. Cibola General Hospital is located an hour from Albuquerque and near Santa Fe. Known for its mild climate and outdoor activities, Grants NM offers low property taxes and affordable housing.
Cibola General Hospital provides services including general surgery, 24-hour emergency care, intensive care, internal medicine, obstetrics, pathology, pediatric dentistry, podiatry, primary care, and radiology with X-ray, CT, MRI. We have three operating rooms, including one for scopes. Additional services include clinics, lab, pharmacy, cardiopulmonary, rehab, and skilled care beds.
Job Summary and Scope:
The phlebotomy technician draws quality blood samples from patients or blood donors and prepares specimens for testing. The technician interacts directly with patients, creating trust and confidence while explaining procedures, taking vital signs, and drawing blood safely and accurately. Responsibilities include preparing blood samples, sterilizing equipment, and following safety protocols. The role requires working well under pressure, maintaining confidentiality, and accurately recording blood histories.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Dispose of contaminated sharps according to laws and policies.
- Document specimen collection and analysis routes.
- Draw blood from arteries using arterial collection techniques.
- Collect fluid or tissue samples using proper procedures.
- Dispose of biohazardous materials safely.
- Draw blood from capillaries via dermal puncture.
- Draw blood from veins using vacuum tubes, syringes, or butterfly needles.
- Explain collection procedures to patients.
- Match requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Organize and sterilize blood-drawing equipment.
- Administer subcutaneous or intramuscular injections as permitted.
- Calibrate and maintain collection machines.
- Collect specimens at scheduled intervals for tests.
- Conduct standard tests such as blood alcohol, cultures, glucose tolerance, urinalysis, and drug tests.
- Enter patient and specimen data into computer systems.
- Process samples for further analysis.
Position Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified MA or Phlebotomist
- Proficient in computer and office equipment use
- Skilled in reading and documenting medical records
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of compliance and privacy laws
Physical Requirements: The role involves frequent manipulative skills, hand-eye coordination, walking, standing, sitting, and some lifting. Ability to work under stress, communicate effectively, and multi-task is essential.
