As a Phlebotomy Lab Technician, you will collect blood samples from patients in an outpatient setting as well as package them for transport and deliver them to the appropriate location. Many patients fear needles; with your experience and care, you can help put the patient at ease while obtaining all required specimens.
A caregiver in this position works days from 3:30 AM – 7:30 AM.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood collection procedures and related tasks.
- Verify order requests and identifying information prior to drawing blood or collecting the specimen/kit to be tested by analytical staff.
- Label all specimens collected and deliver them to the appropriate processing area.
- Follow venipuncture procedures and maintain appropriate log sheets.
- Greet patients warmly and professionally at check-in, at outpatient lab desks, or when entering a patient\'s room.
- Complete test request entry and specimen receipt using lab computer.
- Perform specimen processing and send-out tasks, including accessioning, centrifugation and packaging for transport, for all specimen types.
- Communicate essential information to appropriate personnel.
- Pick up and deliver blood, other sample types and lab supplies to appropriate areas.
Minimum qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduate of Phlebotomy Program OR one year of specimen collection experience
- Computer experience
Preferred qualifications
- Formal Phlebotomy certification
- One year experience with specimen collection and laboratory techniques and procedures
Physical Requirements
- Requires frequent and long durations of standing and walking.
- Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing equipment and make measurements.
Personal Protective Equipment
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
