Position Summary:
We are seeking a Supervisor, Phlebotomy, to join our Clinical Labs team. This full-time, dayshift role involves planning, directing, and managing all laboratory phlebotomy operations across the hospital. The supervisor oversees workflow, staffing, regulatory compliance, supplies, financials, and personnel management in the Customer Service and Patient Service Centers, ensuring adherence to hospital policies and standards such as NYSDOH CLEP, DNV, CMS, among others. The role also includes oversight of Quality Assurance functions and problem resolution.
Job Responsibilities:
Developmental
- Evaluate and implement staffing and patient flow changes.
- Set priorities and establish responsibilities and timelines.
- Maintain current laboratory manuals relevant to the department.
- Supervise workflow for phlebotomists and emergency room assistants, ensuring timely specimen collection and processing.
- Monitor staff attendance, attitude, and dress code, taking action as necessary.
- Ensure safety and infection control compliance.
- Evaluate new products, procedures, and equipment, and anticipate supply needs.
Human Resources
- Assist in developing job descriptions, competency assessments, and evaluations.
- Manage staffing to ensure operational coverage.
- Promote service excellence and hospital values among staff.
- Participate in hiring, counseling, and resolving personnel issues.
- Establish effective communication with management.
Financial
- Monitor expenditures and optimize resource utilization.
- Maintain inventory and evaluate costs of supplies and equipment.
- Seek budget efficiencies.
Operational Management
- Resolve complex procedural issues and troubleshoot.
- Schedule staff for laboratory and emergency department shifts.
- Maintain manuals, documents, and procedures.
- Review results for accuracy and validity.
- Organize and maintain records and reports.
- Participate in hospital quality and departmental committees.
- Ensure staff training, evaluation, and competency.
Communication and Confidentiality
- Coordinate with vendors and technical support.
- Act as liaison for laboratory information systems.
- Manage staff access and confidentiality issues.
Statistical and Educational Responsibilities
- Assist with statistical reporting and billing issues.
- Train and evaluate new employees and students.
- Encourage ongoing professional development.
General Performance and Other Expectations
- Demonstrate leadership and teamwork.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with staff and physicians.
- Attend meetings and stay informed of procedural changes.
- Ensure safety and compliance with policies.
- Maintain punctuality, dress code, and confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications:
- AA or BS degree preferred; at least 3 years of supervisory phlebotomy experience in healthcare required.
- Phlebotomy Certification from a recognized program.
- Strong customer service, laboratory information systems knowledge, and familiarity with insurance and coding (ICD-10).
- At least six years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
- Analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills; knowledge of regulatory agencies and billing systems.
Required Licenses:
Phlebotomy Technician Certification.
Qualified candidates must communicate effectively across all organizational levels.
