Supervisor, Phlebotomy - Laboratory - Full Time, Days

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center with a wide range of specialty services and an emphasis on quality patient care. This role reports to Laboratory Leadership and oversees phlebotomy operations across the hospital to support the mission and vision of the organization.

Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Supervisor, Phlebotomy - Laboratory - Full Time, Days - Clinical Labs-Procure,Dist,Adm - Full-Time. The position is accountable for planning, directing, and controlling all phases of laboratory phlebotomy operations throughout the hospital, ensuring proper functioning of Customer Service and Patient Service Centers, staffing, regulatory compliance, and related resources.

Job Responsibilities:

Developmental

  • Evaluates and implements changes based on departmental day to day staffing and patient flow.
  • Sets priorities, assesses responsibilities and establishes timetables for section.
  • Keeps Laboratory manual current as it pertains to their department.
  • Supervises the workflow for all laboratory phlebotomists and emergency room medical assistants, establishes their priorities, workloads, and procedures, and provides day-to-day problem resolution and troubleshooting to ensure timely collection and processing of patient specimens.
  • Monitors staff attendance, attitude, and dress code; takes appropriate action if required.
  • Monitors safety and infection control compliance and corrects any issues as needed.
  • Evaluates new products, procedures, and equipment; anticipates and recommends the need for new supplies and procedures.

Human Resources

  • Assists in the development of job descriptions, competency assessments, and evaluation.
  • Responsible for department staffing to ensure adequate operational coverage.
  • Ensures staff follows service excellence initiatives and the hospital’s core values.
  • Ensures staff are patient/customer/coworker friendly and respectful.
  • Assists in the selection and interviewing of prospective employees.
  • Counsels personnel in accordance with job description, hospital policy, and current standards in laboratory medicine.
  • Assists in the resolution of personnel issues.
  • Establishes good communication and working relationships with management; attends HR-related meetings and training.
  • Monitors expenditures to ensure the section utilizes financial resources efficiently; maintains inventory to minimize outdating while ensuring adequate supplies.
  • Evaluates quality and cost effectiveness of new or replacement supplies and equipment and procedures; seeks new means to meet budget objectives.
  • Evaluates staffing needs and organizes schedules to minimize OT.

Operational Management

  • Serves as a section resource for resolving difficult and complex problems; troubleshoots procedures.
  • Schedules laboratory 8-hour and Emergency Department 12-hour staff.
  • Maintains, reviews, and updates manuals, documents, and procedures in the section.
  • Ensures procedures are performed per established protocol; reviews results for accuracy and validity.
  • Maintains section statistics, records, and computer files; may assume administrative responsibility for the entire laboratory when necessary.
  • Participates in Hospital and Department PI programs and related committees as requested.
  • Completes reports, appraisals, and training guides in a timely fashion.
  • Organizes work efficiently and maintains proficiency in lab applications (e.g., Wellsoft, reference testing, sendouts).
  • Maintains competency in all phases of phlebotomy and is responsible for staff training and evaluation.

Communication and Confidentiality

  • Responds to and initiates contact with outside vendors and technical support to resolve issues.
  • Serves as a liaison between laboratory services and information systems; assigns staff access with input from laboratory administration.
  • Maintains physician links for laboratory reports; evaluates confidentiality issues and reports to the director.
  • Uses independent judgment to perform related tasks.

Statistical Information

  • Assists in building and reporting statistical data; validates values and investigates errors.
  • Assists in billing issues related to laboratory systems and in the financial coding and charge master changes.
  • Participates in troubleshooting system errors.

Educational

  • Directs training of new employees and phlebotomy students; evaluates progress and adjusts training schedules.
  • Provides ongoing continuing education through professional materials and experiences.
  • Makes sure staff remains current through professional organizations, seminars, and literature.
  • Provides information and recommendations to other medical professionals as needed; serves as a resource for staff and students.
  • Encourages staff participation in evaluating new products and methods.

General Performance

  • Demonstrates leadership and supports colleagues’ development through role modeling and guidance.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with physicians and patient care staff to improve patient care.
  • Keeps Administrative Director informed of changes in procedures, policy, or technique.
  • Ensures safety requirements are met and reports issues.
  • Attends management meetings and participates in resolving laboratory service issues.
  • Uses good judgment in handling situations not covered by instructions; remains flexible to changing needs.

Other Functions and Performance Expectations

  • Maintains consistent on-time attendance and adheres to dress code.
  • Completes required hospital training and complies with confidentiality policies.
  • Follows call-in procedures when sick, late, or absent.

Minimum Qualifications:
AA or BS preferred with at least 3 years of phlebotomy supervisor experience in a hospital or healthcare setting; Phlebotomy Certification required. Customer service skills with knowledge of laboratory and hospital information systems. Knowledge of insurance providers, ICD-10 CM Coding, medical necessity, and medical terminology. At least six years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital or healthcare setting is required. Analytical and interpersonal skills for leadership; strong organizational and computer skills; knowledge of regulatory agencies (e.g., DNV, NYSDOH). Laboratory billing experience required.
Required Licenses: Phlebotomy Technician Certification

Salary range: $58,500.00 - $84,408.50 Annually. Actual salaries depend on experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range listed does not include bonuses or other forms of compensation.
