Overview
Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Mechanic at San Diego State University to support maintenance, repair, and installation of complex HVAC and refrigeration systems within a dynamic campus environment.
Key Responsibilities
- System Maintenance & Repair: Perform service, repair, and installation of HVAC and refrigeration systems and components.
- Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Use tools to assess issues and ensure optimal system performance.
- Preventive Maintenance: Deliver proactive maintenance to support campus safety and system longevity.
- Emergency Response: Respond to urgent HVAC issues to protect safety and operations.
- Project Completion: Accurately track time and materials; complete tasks on schedule.
- Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and contribute to a clean, hazard-free work environment.
- Team Collaboration: Communicate effectively and maintain respectful working relationships campus-wide.
Qualifications & Experience
Education and Experience: Knowledge of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, electrical, plumbing, codes, thermodynamics, and automated energy/environmental systems. Abilities include diagnosing and repairing complex multi-zone systems, electrical and plumbing work, and managing priorities of work orders. Experience in installation, adjustment, maintenance, and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including central multi-zone systems, with progression toward journey-level responsibilities. Completion of a refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic apprenticeship is required or equivalent experience.
Key Qualifications:
- Ability to analyze and respond to emergencies; recognize and report unsafe conditions.
- Diagnose and repair major malfunctions in complex multi-zone air conditioning systems; service refrigeration equipment including centrifugal, absorber, screw, scroll, and reciprocating systems.
- Associate’s degree and/or NATE certification preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years journey-level HVAC/R experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of systems with 10-ton capacities or greater, in multi-story buildings.
- Knowledge of latest equipment and methods for proper and efficient work practices.
- Experience with central plant systems (chilled water plants, cooling towers) and familiarity with thermal energy storage (TES) systems and BAS/DDC for campus HVAC coordination.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid California Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 10 days of hire.
- Valid EPA refrigerant handling certification.
Position Details
- Full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary status.
- Non-exempt under FLSA; overtime eligible.
- Standard SDSU hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. may vary based on needs.
- Work location: SDSU campus, San Diego.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary is determined by education, experience, and qualifications, with CSU benefits and long-term stability. CSU Classification Salary Range: $71,976 - $104,844 per year (Step 1 - 20). Step placement is determined by qualifications and experience. Future increases subject to contract negotiations.
