Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery used in underground and overhead electrical construction projects. This position supports crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical infrastructure by performing excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and material handling activities in compliance with company standards, safety regulations, and project specifications.
Responsibilities
- Operates heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, skid steers, loaders, and trenchers to support electrical construction projects.
- Reads and interprets site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes as needed.
- Performs pre-operation and post-operation inspections of equipment.
- Monitors equipment performance and reports any mechanical issues to maintenance staff.
- Works closely with site supervisors, electricians, and other team members to coordinate efficient workflows.
- Ensures safe operation of all equipment in compliance with OSHA standards and company safety protocols.
- Participates in daily safety meetings and hazard assessments.
- Assists with manual labor tasks as needed when equipment is not in use.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years of experience operating various types of heavy equipment (excavators, dozers, trenchers, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- CDL.
- OSHA 10 (or higher) certification.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience that results in the successful performance of the job. Additional education may substitute for required experience on a one-for-one year basis or vice versa.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and grade stakes.
- Ability to read and follow site plans, utility markings, and verbal/written instructions.
- Solid understanding of safety procedures and best practices in construction.
- Proficiency in operating multiple types of heavy equipment.
Work Environment
- Heavy work environment with exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, and environmental hazards. Requires lifting 50 pounds or more and wearing protective equipment; exposure to extreme weather, noise, and hazards; climbing, crawling, lying, and working under pressure.
