Overview
About Harris County Flood Control District: The Flood Control District has the mission to reduce the risk of flooding in Harris County, the third most populated county in the United States, with a population in excess of 4.7 million, including the City of Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city. The Flood Control District has jurisdiction over the primary stormwater facilities in the county, which consist of approximately 1,500 channels totaling nearly 2,500 miles in length, as well as more than 60 regional stormwater detention basins, totaling more than 10,000 acres and several wetlands mitigation banks including Greens bayou.
This position is for Heavy Equipment Operator with the Infrastructure Repairs Department.
Responsibilities
- Operate various pieces of heavy construction equipment and hand tools to perform construction activities that maintain open channels within Harris County.
- Demonstrate ability to drive and operate heavy equipment and trucks on all terrain surfaces.
- Perform minor erosion repairs and grading of surfaces on open channels and around drainage elements.
- Install corrugated metal pipe outfalls.
- Construct forms, place rebar, and finish concrete structures.
- Build manholes and inlets.
- Clear rights-of-way of trees, rocks, and other large obstacles.
- Load and unload crawler on flatbed or rollback truck and drive trucks to/from job sites.
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment including excavators, dozers, and backhoes.
- Operate and maintain hand tools including tractors, pole saws, chainsaws, etc.
- Perform other duties as the course and scope of the job directs or as needed.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Experience: Three years of experience in field operations, maintenance, or a related field; knowledge of construction standards, practices, and techniques; knowledge of bayou, drainage area, and rights-of-way maintenance preferred.
- Licensure: Valid Class B Texas Driver’s License.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Heavy construction equipment operation, transport and crew vehicles, small equipment such as generators, water pumps, air compressors, chain saws, tractors; experience with two-way radio and various hand tools.
