Overview
General Statement of Duties: Participates in the work of a solid waste services crew and operates complex heavy equipment in a variety of solid waste collection or support activities throughout the Solid Waste Services Program.
Distinguishing Features of the Class: An employee in this class performs heavy manual labor for collecting, transporting, and disposing of solid waste materials from residential and commercial sources. The employee is responsible for the safe, economic, and efficient operation of heavy solid waste equipment and for the safety of coworkers, and must adhere to all traffic laws, ordinances, and City of Reidsville Rules and Regulations. Work involves driving the commercial/downtown truck and monitoring routes, checking items for proper disposal, overseeing recycling centers, and removing dead animals from roadways. The employee handles field complaints, addresses them promptly, facilitates the collection and disposal of hazardous waste, and recyclable materials. Some judgment is required as to when and how established procedures or guidelines are to be applied, to know what materials to pick up, and according to the rules of the city and regulations enforced at the landfill. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and normal hazards associated with the operation of equipment, vibration, electrical current, and exposure to chemicals. Work is performed under the supervision of the Solid Waste Management Operations Coordinator and is checked daily and through annual appraisals. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Responsibilities
- Operates heavy automotive and other equipment for collecting, transporting, and disposing of solid waste, yard waste, and recycling materials from residential and commercial sources.
- Transports waste to landfill and recyclables to the appropriate site; unloads and loads waste materials at the transfer station for transport to landfills.
- Provides information within the area of assignment; responds to customer complaints and issues, requests for service, and inquiries about solid waste collection service from the general public regarding changes in service levels, frequency of service, or general solid waste issues; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Oversees, cleans, organizes, and maintains the recycling center.
- Removes dead animals from roadways.
- Reads maps for the location and verification of work assignments and hazards.
- Monitors collections of items for proper disposal.
- Performs related duties as required.
Physical Requirements
Work in this class is described as moderately strenuous and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing. An employee must possess the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment. The employee is subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, vibration, noise, exposure to heat, and chemicals. The employee is subject to both environmental conditions inside and outside.
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
- Vocational training, with considerable work experience loading trucks, transporting, and disposing of waste and recycled materials;
- Equivalent combination of training and experience.

- Valid North Carolina driver's license - Class A
