ACCOUNTING SPECIALIST
JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION PURPOSE
Responsible for performing a variety of accounting, financial, and electronic services as assigned. Handles the accurate and timely processing of accounting duties. Keeps records and accounts accurate and current in accordance with GAAP. Researches and resolves discrepancies and accounting errors. Completes related reports, summaries, and records. Conducts special projects as assigned. Is aligned with and promotes U1 values.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
- Assumes responsibility for the accurate and timely completion of assigned accounting and finance functions.
- Performs accounts payable processing including scanning and uploading documents, paying invoices in a timely manner, and accurate vendor records.
- Performs daily reconciliation of various credit union accounts and subsidiary ledgers, posting journals, verifying information, providing documentation and resolving discrepancies.
- Performs the daily banking reconciliation, ensuring proper balances are maintained.
- Processes timely payment of federal withholding taxes.
- Performs accounting support functions as needed.
- Completes required records and reports and maintains files.
- Completes accounting functions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination with Credit Union personnel and management. To include; maintaining regular contact with other departments to obtain information and/or to correct transactions; meeting deadlines; completing reports, records, and documents accurately and promptly; keeping management informed of area activities and of any significant problems or concerns; attending meetings as required.
- Assumes responsibility for ensuring that professional business relationships are established and maintained with the community, Credit Union members, other financial institutions and accounting professionals. Maintains the Credit Union's professional reputation, both internally and externally. Maintains and ensures the highest degree of confidentiality. Resolves discrepancies and errors promptly. Represents the Credit Union in contacts with business associations and otherwise promotes the Credit Union's image.
- Assumes responsibility for general accounting duties and completes special projects as assigned. Performs related duties as needed. Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
- One year of financial services experience preferred.
- Previous accounting experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Knowledge of basic accounting concepts and procedures including account reconciliation.
- Knowledge of related computer applications.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
- Able to use PC, calculator, and other basic business machines.
- Well organized and detail oriented.
- Good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Cooperative and willing to assist others.

PHYSICAL & INTELLECTUAL DEMANDS:
Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Ability to hear normal conversations, type, pick up small objects, and convey detailed instructions accurately. Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization. Able to interpret various instructions. Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percentages, and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and to deal with sometimes complex problems. Ability to communicate in complex sentences; using normal word order with present and past tenses and using good vocabulary. Ability to read a variety of job-related print and electronic materials. Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.
