Description

As a Perioperative Secretary at MercyOne, you will provide indirect care to surgical patients to ensure efficient patient flow and quality patient care. Under the supervision of the Clinical Director, you will support the daily operations and activity flow of the patient care area by performing a variety of administrative functions and acting as a central source of information for staff, physicians, patients, families and other departments. You are responsible for scheduling operative procedures, ensuring that patient information, procedures, proper equipment and scheduling times are accurate and efficient. You will maintain the perioperative services database, including file maintenance and internal audits, and generate reports from the perioperative scheduling system for analysis by the Clinical Director or other Administrative Services.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule operative procedures, ensuring accurate patient information, procedure details, equipment, and scheduling times.
  • Maintain perioperative services database, perform file maintenance, and conduct internal audits.
  • Generate reports from the perioperative scheduling system for analysis by the Clinical Director or Administrative Services.
  • Act as a receptionist for the nursing unit by screening and routing incoming calls and visitors and communicating routine information to patients and visitors.
  • Collaborate with staff, physicians, and other departments to support efficient patient flow and service delivery.
  • Assist with data entry, scheduling, and communications related to perioperative services.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the unit and manage inventory of departmental supplies.
  • Demonstrate customer-focused behaviors and promote patient satisfaction in alignment with Mercy Customer Service Standards.
  • Provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support to patients and families as appropriate to age and cultural needs described in the department’s scope of service.
  • Meet core nursing competency requirements and unit-specific competencies upon hire and annually, as appropriate to the role.
  • Complete post-op data entry for surgical procedures and maintain physician privileges and preference cards.
  • Distribute surgery schedules to appropriate departments and handle communication with physicians and staff.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in information technology, administration/healthcare, business, or related field preferred or equivalent experience in healthcare.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); high level of computer competency.
  • Medical terminology knowledge required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in an administrative role.
  • Payroll experience is preferred but not required.
