Job Description:
This is an open continuous vacancy announcement that will be used to fill an adjunct vacancy to teach American Sign Language. Until you hear from a representative of the Department of the World Languages and Cultures Department or the Office of HR Faculty, please continue to also apply directly to other positions posted on AU's website.
The World Languages and Cultures (WLC) Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for an adjunct faculty position for upcoming Academic Year to teach a 3-credit Introduction to American Sign Language course. Rank will depend on an applicant’s highest degree earned in the field. The applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
The candidate should ideally (1) hold an advanced degree (doctorate or masters) from a nationally accredited institution; (2) have native or near-native fluency in ASL; (3) have demonstrated teaching excellence in American Sign Language at different levels; (4) have a strong understanding of Deaf culture and community ; and (5)be committed to collegiality, good citizenship, and a desire to serve the school.
We seek an experienced, versatile candidate, who, through their work, teaching, research, and/or service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the World Languages and Culture Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction at the undergraduate level and fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
Duties And Responsibilities:
- Teach one section of ASL as assigned
- Develop lesson plans and classroom material in alignment with the department standards
- Incorporate Deaf culture and language into instruction
- Evaluate and assess student performance in a timely manner
- Hold regular office hours to support student learning
- Use the learning management platform Canvas to communicate and post course material.
The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences has the following adjunct salary ranges:
Candidates Without a Terminal Degree In Course Subject Area
1-2 Credit Course: $2,865
3-4 Credit Course: $4,725
5-6 Credit Course: $4,938
Candidates With a Terminal Degree In Course Subject Area
1-2 Credit Course: $3,414
3-4 Credit Course: $5,400
5-6 Credit Course: $5,548
