Basic Function
Kern Community College District accepts applications for part-time, hourly faculty pools on a continuous basis. This allows the division to contact qualified applicants immediately if a need arises without having to re-advertise. Applications submitted will remain active for up to two years.
The district is soliciting applications for part-time, hourly adjunct instructors. The starting salary range is $67.00/hour; hourly rate may vary based on the type of assignment and the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula. Representative Duties
This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture language used by the Deaf community in the United States and Canada, focusing on the development of basic conversation skills while emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in-class and out-of-class requirements.
Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level. Describe and demonstrate ASL classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement. Compose ASL gloss translation from English. Explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf community. Examine and show an understanding of the history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.
This assignment may include using multiple teaching methodologies and teaching at other campus sites; day, evening, or weekend classes; large classes; distance learning classes; and classes for incarcerated students. Note: the program may reference an inmate education context.
Minimum Qualifications
Option 1: Bachelor degree and 2 years related professional experience.
Option 2: Associate degree and 6 years related professional experience.
Option 3: The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications. Candidates who possess equivalent qualifications must request and submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form. Supporting documents must be included with the completed form. AND A demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
