American Sign Language Instructor, Part-time Adjunct Pool - East Kern, Inmate Ed Program Opportunity.

Base pay range: $60.00/hr - $66.00/hr. Salary: $66.00 Hourly. Job Type: Part-time. Location: Edwards/California City/Tehachapi (Rising Scholars), CA. Department: English (ENGL).

Responsibilities

  • This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada, and focuses on the development of basic conversation skills emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in-class and out-of-class requirements.
  • Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level.
  • Describe and demonstrate American Sign Language classifiers, grammar structure, facial expressions, and body movement.
  • Compose ASL Gloss translation from English.
  • Explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf.
  • Examine and show an understanding of history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.
  • This assignment may include using multiple teaching methodologies and teaching at other campus sites; day, evening, or weekend classes; large classes; distance learning classes; and classes for incarcerated students.
  • Potentially work with inmate education sites and participate in activities related to the inmate education program.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor degree and 2 years related professional experience
OR Associate degree and 6 years related professional experience.
OR The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. Candidates who feel they possess such equivalent qualifications must request and submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form. Supporting documents must be included with the completed form. AND - A demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Note: Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an evaluation service.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission;
