THE POSITION: Cybersecurity Specialist
Join the City of Fresno in building a better Fresno. This role is part of the Security Operations Center (SOC) and focuses on designing and managing advanced security systems, building threat-detection tools, and protecting the city’s critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and manage cybersecurity systems to protect city networks and data.
- Build and maintain tools for threat detection and incident response (e.g., SIEM, firewalls).
- Ensure performance of cybersecurity infrastructure through tuning and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with the Security Operations Center (SOC) to optimize tools and workflows.
- Develop and enforce security standards aligned with frameworks (e.g., NIST, HIPAA).
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and guide remediation efforts.
- Stay current on emerging threats and recommend system upgrades or new tools.
- Document system configurations, protocols, and operational procedures.
- Provide technical guidance to team members and may lead Tier 3 SOC operations.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum qualifications: completion of the requirements below or as stated.

- Option 1: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, AND three (3) years of experience in a cybersecurity engineering or infrastructure-focused role.
- Option 2: High School Diploma or equivalent, AND five (5) years of experience in a cybersecurity engineering or infrastructure-focused role.

- Preferred Qualifications: CISSP, CompTIA Security+, or other relevant credentials.
- The selected eligible individuals will be required to pass a department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment. Depending on assignment, additional background investigations, CVSA and/or polygraph tests may be required.
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License is required; provide a copy if hired.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
- Benefits: UNIT 13 Classification – City of Fresno Professional Employees Association (CFPEA).

Selection Process
The selection process may include Application Review and an Oral Examination. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list. The Oral Examination date is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 3, 2025.

Qualified veterans who pass the examination may receive five (5) additional points. See submission requirements for DD214 documentation.
