Position

A District Sales Manager is needed to lead and manage a team of Clinical District Managers and Territory Managers to achieve and exceed sales plans within a specified budget. The District Manager will recruit, hire, develop, and retain the district’s team and provide input to the Regional Sales Leader regarding sales strategies and plans. They will develop sales goals and objectives for each territory on a fiscal quarterly and monthly basis to achieve and exceed sales performance.

This is a field-based position supporting the Philadelphia District, including 8 territories in the following geographies: Philadelphia, PA; Allentown, PA; Cherry Hill, NJ; Baltimore, MD; Arlington, VA; Frederick, MD; and Washington DC. The expectation is to be in the field 2-3 days/week with 2-3 overnights/month.

This position supports Medtronic's Diabetes business as the company plans to separate the Diabetes division to promote future growth and innovation, reallocating investments and resources across Medtronic. This separation provides an opportunity to unleash potential, enable speed and agility, and drive meaningful innovation and impact on patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a clear vision for the district and motivate the team.
  • Ensure maximum sales coverage with available resources to achieve peak performance, with metrics to measure success over time.
  • Maintain sales data and records to understand market trends, provide direction to employees, and communicate competitive data.
  • Support pre-call planning, strategic account planning, and ensure market/territory strategies are fully executed.
  • Interpret and explain business/marketing policies to employees to maintain consistency and responsiveness to customer needs.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key account personnel to support selling, market development, service efforts, and clinical programs.
  • Provide input to the Regional Sales Leader on sales strategies, promotions, staffing needs, and product acceptance.
  • Foster collaboration and communication between territory sales and clinical teams.
  • Collaborate with Inside District Sales Supervisor to ensure continuity, efficiency, and effective sales pipeline pull-through.
  • Ensure field personnel meet or exceed revenue-based and market development objectives.
  • Work strategically with direct reports to analyze and interpret customer needs.
  • Manage the district budget and effectively control selling expenses.
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations to field employees through visits, calls, and post-sales call reviews.
  • Create development opportunities and assess performance/skill growth for direct reports over time.
  • Recruit, interview, and hire talented field employees, ensuring onboarding and ongoing training.
  • Conduct annual performance and salary reviews, providing recommendations to management.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant sales experience (medical device/pharmaceutical/healthcare sales experience).
  • OR Advanced degree and 3 years of relevant sales and leadership experience.

Nice to Have

  • 2 years of previous work experience managing teams with direct reports or 3 years of Medtronic Diabetes Field Sales experience as a Territory Manager/Sr. Territory Manager (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated skills in business planning, consulting, and territory financial analysis.
  • Proven success in a sales role, meeting or exceeding objectives/goals.
  • Prior experience leading high-performance sales teams in the medical device industry.
  • Award recognition such as President’s Club or Rookie of the Year.
  • Understanding of the Medtronic business environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and consultative sales skills; team-oriented.
  • Experience coaching direct reports or peers, providing candid feedback, and using creative approaches tailored to different styles.
  • Ability to identify economic drivers to maximize performance.
  • Strong skills in data analysis, evaluation, problem-solving, and balancing company/customer goals.
  • Effective understanding of profitability and the ability to align business and customer objectives.
  • Ability to address diverse problems by analyzing data and identifiable factors, exercising judgment within defined practices and policies to find solutions.

Diabetes Business Description

The Diabetes Operating Unit focuses on improving the lives of those within the global diabetes community. We strive to empower people with diabetes to live life on their terms by delivering innovation and providing support, always meeting people where they are in their journey.

Field Roles: Must have a valid driver’s license and active vehicle insurance policy. Driving 100% of the time within the assigned territory may be required and overnight travel may be needed.

Benefits & Compensation

Medtronic offers a competitive salary and flexible benefits package. The company provides a wide range of benefits and compensation plans designed to support you at every career and life stage. Salary ranges for U.S. locations (excl. PR) are listed as $140,000. This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan, with base salary applicable nationwide and potential variation by experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for a Sales Incentive Plan (SIP).
