Job Description: Manufacturing Engineer – Optical Components Center (OCC)

Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) Business Area in Orlando, FL, seeks a Manufacturing Engineer to join its Optical Components Center (OCC). This role focuses on the photolithography process and thin film coating of optics, contributing to the development of best-in-class products and solutions. The position reports to the functional area manager within the OCC.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support manufacturing processes for optics.
  2. Perform spectral measurements.
  3. Provide technical guidance to operators.
  4. Apply lean manufacturing techniques.
  5. Investigate failures and lead non-recurring efforts.
  6. Participate in research and development.
  7. Drive the adoption of new technologies (capital investments, automation, robotics) to improve efficiency and quality.

This environment involves small-scale challenges with significant customer impact. The work includes designing, developing, and supporting the production lifecycle of electromagnetic grids and thin film coatings for optical systems, and evaluating/measuring their performance. The ideal candidate enjoys understanding how production processes influence end products and is eager to learn new skills. Training opportunities are available.

The position is a second shift role (Tuesday-Friday, 4/10 schedule). US citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance are mandatory.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline from an accredited college.
  • Skills, experience, and/or coursework in one or more of the following: thin film, coatings, photolithography, vacuum systems, materials characterization.
  • Microsoft Office software experience.
  • US Citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience across multiple manufacturing engineering disciplines (e.g., writing/reviewing work instructions, data analytics, automation, product lifecycle management).
  • For thin film coating: design, manufacturing (physical vapor deposition, ion beam sputtering, chemical vapor deposition), and metrology of optical thin film coatings.
  • For photolithography: semiconductor fabrication processes (wafer preparation, coating, exposure, development, etching) and equipment (steppers, scanners, track systems).
  • Experience with vacuum systems, PVD, sputtering, and plasma sources.
  • Experience with analytical and metrology techniques (spectrophotometry, ellipsometry, interferometry, SEM, X-ray diffraction).
  • Knowledge of process control techniques (SPC, control charts, yield enhancement).
  • Small team leadership skills.
  • Effective collaboration with manufacturing, quality, and electro-optical teams.
  • Strong time management, independence, and cross-functional communication skills.
