Summary:

The RL (Reality Lab) team at Meta is helping more people around the world come together and connect through world-class hardware and software. As part of the RL Devices team, we are builders who break down barriers to what is possible. Together we design and build manufacturing processes that transform technology into products. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced engineer focused on optical thin film to join our team. As an integral part of our cross-functional team, you will collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners to design, develop, and characterize thin film coatings, as well as hard coatings, for augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) applications. Your expertise will play a crucial role in delivering user experiences and shaping the future of camera optics and display technology.

Required Skills:

Optical Coating Engineer Responsibilities:

Design and develop thin film coatings for mass manufacturing, addressing requirements such as angular and spectral control, polarization, phase and perceptual color optimization, and other specialized optical properties. Ensure solutions are optimized for process complexity, yield, reliability, and cost-effectiveness

Characterize and evaluate thin films and nanostructures using techniques such as spectrometry, ellipsometry, and other relevant analytical methods

Develop and optimize optical coating processes, including vacuum deposition techniques (PVD, CVD, ALD), hard coatings and other deposition techniques

Provide technical leadership in the design, development, and manufacturing of coatings for camera optics, optical filters, cover windows, and hard coatings on plastic substrates

Plan and execute coating design of experiments (DOEs), perform data analysis based on experimental results, and generate recommendations to enhance performance, improve reliability (REL) and reduce costs

Working closely with internal cross-functional teams and external industry partners to troubleshoot thin film issues, including but not limited to optical performance, uniformity, REL, deposition, metrology and yield, and implement corrective actions

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

BS or MS in Optical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or related technical discipline with 5+ year industry experience in thin film design, characterization and manufacturing

Demonstrated knowledge in thin film design, theory and materials properties and proficiency with design software Essential Macleod, OptiLayer, TFCalc or OTF Studio

Hands-on experience with the coating deposition process, including PVD (sputtering, thermal and electron-beam evaporation), spray coating and dip coating

Experience with concise communication skills and experience interfacing with internal teams and external partners

Knowledge of statistical methods and proficient in data analysis with tools such as Matlab, JMP or Python

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with extensive experience with high-volume coating manufacturing processes

Proficient in optical filter coating design, with expertise in optimizing coating to accommodate different deposition technology and stress balance. Experience with model and implement coating within optical simulation software, including FRED, Zemax, and Code V

Proven expertise in resolving intricate material and interfacial issues related to optical coating processes in high-volume manufacturing settings, leveraging in-depth knowledge of thin-film physics and process optimization techniques

Public Compensation:
