The City of Belleville is accepting applications for a full-time custodian.
Job Summary
Maintain an orderly appearance and sanitary conditions in assigned area(s). Notify supervisor when major repairs or projects are needed.
Job Scope
No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Clean all areas of assigned building(s).
- Service, clean, and supply restrooms. Fill all dispensers.
- Clean, wax, and polish floors. Vacuum, steam clean, or shampoo carpets.
- Gather and properly dispose of trash from buildings and parking lots.
- Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment.
- Dust and polish furniture and other areas as required.
- Move furniture, equipment, or supplies manually, or by using hand trucks, to thoroughly clean areas.
- Mow grass and remove snow around City Hall and maintain the grounds.
- Change light bulbs.
- Carry a phone and be available for emergency on-call duty, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Deliver library materials between Main and West Branch Library buildings.
- Perform physical labor, including loading and unloading books and handling library recyclable materials.
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that promotes a good working relationship with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of custodial techniques, procedures, and safety protocol. Ability to read and understand MSDSs and to safely handle cleaning supplies and equipment. Ability to properly clean upholstery, floors, and carpets. Ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of housekeeping equipment and a push mower, weed eater, blower, and snow blower. Ability to perform physical labor including, but not limited to, lifting a minimum of 50 pounds, carrying, climbing, pushing, and pulling. Ability to work for extended periods, outdoors, under adverse weather conditions. Ability to organize time effectively. Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts, if necessary. Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision. Ability to interact professionally with supervisors, co-workers and the general public. Must participate in required training, and work in accordance with safety procedures and City policies.
Special Requirements
Requires high school diploma or equivalent. Requires two years previous custodial experience. Must possess current, valid driver’s license. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Must fully comply with all employment requirements set forth in the City of Belleville Revised Code of Ordinances, as amended, including but not limited to the residency provisions therein. Applications currently on file for this vacancy are still under consideration.
