Job Summary
Cal State Fullerton invites a Lead Custodian to join Capital Programs and Facilities Management (CPFM). The Lead Custodian works under the supervision of the Custodial Operations Manager to lead a group of custodians in custodial duties, maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming learning environment. The role emphasizes safety, proper use of PPE, customer service, reliability, and a proactive, team-oriented leadership style. This position supports the university’s mission, values, and commitment to a diverse and inclusive community.
About the Position: CPFM is responsible for planning, developing, and maintaining a safe, sustainable, high-quality learning and working environment. Facilities Management oversees university resources/assets, land use planning, capital improvements, project development, construction, and facilities operations and maintenance including custodial services, landscape services, building trades, mechanical/electrical, and recycling services. The Lead Custodian is a key member of the Custodial Services team, expected to model ethical practices, diversity, openness, flexibility, and integrity.
Responsibilities include: lead a group of custodians, supervise and train staff, promote safety, manage tasks and quality, and provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff. Foster a cohesive leadership team and empower colleagues. Maintain campus cleanliness in alignment with the university’s mission and values. Work well in a team, balance sharing duties, taking ownership, and taking initiative as needed.
Essential Qualifications
- One to two years of related custodial experience with leadership responsibilities and on-the-job training.
- Working knowledge of custodial methods, materials, chemicals, equipment, and safety/sanitation practices.
- Knowledge of lead and supervisory practices; ability to train others and provide feedback on performance.
- Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate for duties.
- Ability to use computers to track work orders and order supplies/materials.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships; ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action.
Background check: A background check (including criminal records) must be completed satisfactorily. CSU may make a conditional offer of employment; offer may be rescinded if disqualifying information is found or information is falsified. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a large educational institution or similar environment.
- Previous experience leading custodians.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Extended periods of physical activity, including gripping/grasping, lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.
- Work with a variety of chemicals.
- May move in and out of buildings in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to work overtime or alternate shifts as assigned.
- Will carry a Master Key.
- All employees are subject to fingerprinting and a criminal records check.
