About the Position

Capital Programs and Facilities Management (CPFM) provides oversight of university resources and assets, including custodial services. The Lead Custodian is a key member of the Custodial Services team, working under the supervision of the Custodial Operations Manager to lead a group of custodians and other personnel in custodial duties. The role emphasizes safety, PPE use, timely hazard response, and exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and staff. The Lead Custodian contributes to a cohesive leadership team and supports a culture of respect, integrity, growth, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Lead worker for a group of custodians or other personnel engaged in custodial duties; provide on-the-job training and leadership to others.
  • Promote safety and proper use of PPE; respond promptly to trip/slip/fall hazards and other safety concerns.
  • Deliver excellent customer service; interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Collaborate to build a strong, cohesive leadership team; balance sharing duties with taking ownership and initiative to complete tasks.
  • Maintain a clean campus environment in support of the university’s mission, values, and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

  • One to two years of custodial experience with leadership responsibilities and on-the-job training experience.
  • Working knowledge of custodial methods, materials, chemicals, equipment, and safety/sanitation practices.
  • Knowledge of effective lead and supervisory practices; ability to train others and provide performance feedback.
  • Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate for duties; ability to use computers to track work orders and order supplies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a large educational institution or similar environment.
  • Experience leading custodians.

License/Certifications

  • Valid California driver’s license.

Special Working Conditions

  • Extended periods of physical activity; lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to chemicals; varied weather conditions.
  • Overtime or alternate shifts as assigned; may carry a Master Key.
  • Fingerprinting and a criminal records check required.
