Overview

Under the direction of the Facilities Services Custodial Supervisor, the Sr. Custodian performs a variety of custodial/housekeeping tasks to care, maintain, disinfect, sanitize, and preserve campus facilities. The Sr. Custodian is responsible for the upkeep of their assigned building(s) to ensure a safe and clean environment for staff and students. They may work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with project deadlines and close turnarounds, proactively addressing daily tasks and maintaining a positive attitude. Sr. Custodians communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students to ensure positive campus relationships with customers.

Note: This job posting is for multiple openings on various shifts including day, swing, and graveyard shifts. The full salary range is $21.05 - $28.89 per hour, with a realized minimum pay of $25 per hour. Salary offers are based on education, licensure/certifications, experience, and other organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization. As a University employee, you will comply with applicable University policies and collective bargaining agreements. Federal, state, or local directives may impose additional requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform custodial/housekeeping tasks to care for, maintain, disinfect, sanitize, and preserve campus facilities.
  • Maintain the upkeep of assigned building(s) to ensure a safe and clean environment for staff and students.
  • Work independently or as part of a team in assigned work areas with project deadlines and close turnarounds.
  • Take initiative to address daily tasks and maintain a clean environment.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students to ensure a positive relationship with campus customers.

Requirements

Educational Requirements
  • High School Diploma
Experience Requirements
  • Six months of experience in custodial/housekeeping operations or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in safe use of a wide variety of custodial equipment (e.g., stripping/buffing machines, vacuums, steam pressure washers, carpet extractors, floor cleaning machines, squeegees, brushes).
  • Experience in safe use of cleaning chemicals, their interactions, hazard signs, and disposal methods.
  • Experience in cleaning and maintaining various floor surfaces (resilient tile, carpet, terrazzo).
  • Prior experience prioritizing work orders, routine work, and emergency requests, selecting proper materials and equipment for safe, efficient work.
  • Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and delivering exemplary customer service.
Minimum Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency overtime.
  • Ability to follow assignments with minimal direction and manage fluctuating workload.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English with coworkers and the public.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining various floor surfaces.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays; early mornings, mornings, evenings or graveyard shifts as needed.
  • Knowledge of safely using cleaning chemicals and understanding their interactions and disposal methods.
  • Ability to safely use a wide variety of custodial equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to perform heavy/physically demanding tasks (lifting up to 75 pounds, moving heavy carts, etc.).
  • Ability to work indoors or outdoors in variable conditions (temperature, dust, moisture).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of UC policies, procedures and systems.
  • Knowledge and skill in MS Office and email usage.
  • Basic knowledge of safety procedures for hazardous materials and biohazards cleanup and disposal.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations (e.g., IIPP).
  • Ability to read and understand MSDS information.
