POSITION TITLE: Custodian/Driver
LOCATION/DEPT: Elgin Corps
REPORTS TO: Corps Officers
FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt
STATUS TYPE: RFT
PAY GRADE: 402
PAY RANGE: $15.75 - $20.00
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Custodial duties: ensure the entire building is cleaned (offices, Chapel), vacuum carpets, mop floors.
- Attend to bathrooms: replace hand towels and toilet paper, keep liquid soap containers filled.
- Attend to countertops in bathrooms and kitchen.
- Set up classrooms and designated rooms for corps activities and weekly activities.
- Periodically inspect the building to remove cobwebs and replace light bulbs as necessary.
- Empty and dispose of garbage from offices, kitchen, and bathrooms; trash is to be disposed of in designated bins.
- Supervise and work with Community Service Workers to maintain cleanliness for programs.
- Outdoor grounds keeping, parking lot, park, and yard work.
- Assist with unloading food deliveries for the pantry and setting up gym for food distribution.
- Driving duties: drive the Corps van, assist with pickups, keep vehicles fueled, and perform other duties as assigned.
- Report issues or problems with the van to the Corps Officers.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
- High School education or equivalent preferred.
- Basic maintenance experience and knowledge of related tools and equipment.
- Valid Driver's license and good driving record.
- Clearance of TSA MVR check.

- Self-starter able to work unsupervised.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent safe driving skills with ability to operate large passenger vehicles.
- Must possess a valid IL driver’s license and meet MVR requirements.
- Positive interaction with passengers and staff; polite and respectful.
- Ability to work quickly and maintain high cleaning standards.
- Flexible attitude to changing priorities and schedule.
- Ability to work well with staff and clients; represent The Salvation Army positively.
- Supportive of the mission of The Salvation Army.
Position limitations
- Commit resources allocated or approved by Army leadership.
- Keep Corps Officers informed of critical issues related to responsibilities.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures in performing duties.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Light to heavy physical work; ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb a ladder.
- Regularly required to remain stationary, use hands, communicate, and move; able to stoop, kneel, or crouch as needed.
- Work environment includes office and outdoor spaces with varying noise levels.
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere and treat donors, clients, and colleagues with respect and dignity.
